Christchurch hotel - George, Crowne Plaza, Millennium, other?
 

Please recommend a hotel for a brief stay in Christchurch in November.

We stayed at the Copthorne Christchurch Central. It is a typical tourist hotel. Nothing particular to recommend it except that the location is very good. It is a short walk (2-3 blocks) to Cathedral Square. The street car and the free bus are both less than a block away. Day-tour buses parked out front in the morning. Looked like it was the origin point for most of them.

How long is your brief stay, overnight, 2 nights or 3 nights.

Overnight then the Copthorne is good, but if you have a more of a budget then the Heritage and Millenium are better.

We're staying one night, after landing in CHC at 10:30 am following a very long day of flying.

Leaning towards the Millenium, as it seems nicer than the Copthorne and Crowne Plaza, and might have a higher possibility of getting a room on arrival than the George due to being much larger.

Any other views?

Have you thought about staying at a B&B instead of a big corporate hotel?

My experience is that the B&B managers are likely to allow an early check in, especially if you communicate directly with them prior to arrival.

The George has a nice location and is $$$. If I had unlimited funds (or a good discount), I would stay there.

Maybe it's just me, but I find Victoria Square, where the Copthorne is, a bit creepy at night.
However it may not be an issue for you especially if you've had a long flight and get to bed early.

I generally prefer big anonymous somewhat boring hotels to B&Bs, etc.

A mid tier room at the Millennium (a bit more space and a view) seems about the same price as a low end room (first floor) at the George. Is the George that much better?

The Millenium is in the Central Business district, convenient to Cathedral Square.

The George is west of the "downtown" adjacent to Hagley Park in a low-rise setting. Their restaurants are well-regarded.

Even though you said you like "impersonal", there are two smaller places that are much closer to the Botanic Garden section of Hagley Park, and might be worth looking into, "Orari" and "Classic Villa."
