Choosing an apartment in SYD
 

Hi all, Wondering if someone could give me some advice on a 2 bedroom apartment in SYD?? I really can't make up my mind which to stay in. I would like to be either in the Rocks or Darling Harbour. I have seen from other forums that the Goldsbrough Apts have generally not been considered great.

The Suncity is a bit too pricey.

Any suggestions welcome. It's for myself, partner and mother. Many thanks

We stayed at the Waldorf on Liverpool st over new year. Its up within 5 mins or so walk of Darling Harbour. Quite reasonably priced and in close proximity to DH.

You could probably get away with a one bedroom suite for the three of you, which would save on costs.
I have in the past twelve months stayed at two apartment hotels in the Sydney Central area. Most recently stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment at Key West in the Rocks area, fantastic views, spacious apartment, good service, close to everything. The one bedroom suites have a separate bedroom and a large living area with a sofa bed and are suitable for three people or two couples, although there is only one bathroom.
The other apartment hotel is the Medina Grand the corner of Kent and Bathurst sts. It is close to the Town Hall, a full service supermarket(Woolworths), the cinemas and Darling Harbour. Although not in the Rocks the area is very convenient. Our two bedroom apartment was again large and could have slept 6, two bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, balconies, full kitchen, laundry etc.(no room service, altho there is a restaurant on the ground floor) We paid $200 AUS per night. Again you could save by getting a one bedroom with sofa bed option
Would stay in either apartment again.

Just to make your searching easier the apartments referred to in the earlier post are spelt - Quay West.

Lina, is that $1550 in US or real dollars? :) If US$, we're talking over AU$2200, which if I've read you correctly would give you a budget of at least AU$300 per night for accommodation. I'm no longer a Sydneysider and may have been too long away from Sin City, but I would have thought that would give you some reasonable options. What do the experts think?

Wow, thanks for all your suggestions. I have given the Waldorf a go. I didn't want to go for the sofa bed option as although i know they are usually pretty good it would mean myself and my partner in a nice cosy big bed and my mother stuck out on the sofa, which i don't think she would appreciate!!!

My budget was AUD $ not US. I would have to be pretty flush to be looking at $1550 US a week!

The Waldorf should have recovered from the Mucky family visit by now - but if they seem a little scarred, then....sometimes it just takes a lot of time!

The waldorf was a great debate back last year and whilst it is no boutique apartment it is ok.Location is fine and the restaurant next door is basic but a good laf, we took several meals "back home" from there.
Across the road is a wholesale souvenier shop all the same stuff as Sydney at almost half the price.

Hi Lina, We stayed in a very comfortable apartment in N. Sydney near Crow's Nest. While I doubt our particulatr accomodation is available, this is nice Sydney neighborhood. 15 minutes by bus to the Rocks and chock full of good food shops , restaurants
( excellent Thai and Chinese), lush and green.

We very much enjoyed our time there.

We're staying at the Waldorf in Liverpool St, frm tomorrow thru Saturday night.

Self, wife & 3 young kids squeezing into a one Bdr Apt - Kids in the sofa bed, and an extra rollaway being brought in for around $200 Oz per night total.
A bit above our normal price point, but we got cheap airfares up ($58 Oz Rtn each) from Melbourne, and have got tickets to The Lion King (Musical)on Thursday night.
Just need my work day to hurry up and finish!

Thanks Andrew, I think we will have to be a bit further in though as my mother isn't a great walker and the closer we are to the bars etc, the better.

I may investigate this area whilst we're there though as we will be in sydney for 6 months overall.

Posted a brief trip report yesterday
"Sydney Short Trip".
Waldorf was good - great location for the things we wanted to do; reasonable price and facilities to operate as a "home base" for a few days.

We had a one bdr apartment, and this was big enough for us all, although only one TV and one bathroom required a level of co-operation and co-ordination not experienced at home for a couple of years!!!
