CFP: how much to bring, ATMs?
 

We're going to Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora and Le Taha for 16 nights. We'll bring a transaction-free credit card for meals, excursions, etc. but would like to have cash available for taxis, small expenses, tips, stocking the bar in our room, etc. My questions are what's a reasonable amount of CFP to bring with us and are ATMs readily available on the islands we're visiting? I know this depends on our spending habits, I am just looking for some ballpark guidance. I anticipate our resorts would provide currency exchange, but in my experience in other countries that's usually an unfavorable exchange rate. Thanks in advance!

There are ATMs in the airports and at several banks

No need to bring CFP with you. Just make cash withdrawals at ATM's when you arrive at the airport and get additional cash from ATM when needed.

As for how much cash you'll need at any given time - that will depend on YOUR personal travel style and needs. When I travel internationally I rarely carry more than the equivalent of $150US in local currency. I just withdraw cash from ATM's on an as needed basis

It's been a while since I've been to French Polynesia, but did you see the below info page:

"You can exchange money most easily at Faaa airport in Tahiti before coming on to Bora Bora. There are several banks with ATMs in Vaitape, Bora Bora's main town. Bora Bora airport also has an ATM. The United States dollar is accepted in some places."

The below info sheet from Le Tahaa Resort indicates there are no ATMs on Le Tahaa.

Will your ATM card be compatible with their ATMs?

I can recall going out to dinner in Papeete and my husband saying, "We have to dine at a restaurant that accepts credit cards." It wasn't a problem finding one.

But you might want to check out Les Roulottes, the food trucks at Place Vai'ete. To dine here, you'll need cash.
