Cant Decide Kiwi Birds or Bangers and mash?

We are two 21 year old Canadians who would like to go travalling in Nov. 2004. We cannot decide between Europe and New Zealand. We have $6000 CAD each to spend and about 4 weeks to play with. Help us decide where to go and what to see.
Thanks

bws:

Have been to both places. Go to New Zealand. Your money will go farther.

Another vote for New Zealand. Beautiful country, lots to see and do, and a heck of a lot cheaper than anywhere in Europe or the UK.

Don't want to do my home continent down: "Europe" is immensely varied - all those different languages/cultures - and beautiful too. But at that time of year I'd definitely choose NZ.
Just by the by - NZ is bigger than u might think. So if u decide to go, and plan on visiting both N & S islands it might be worth seeing if u can get a flight package that gives you a few internal flights thrown in for free or at a discount.

I don't know where you live in Canada, but I think Europe would provide much more variety and breadth of experience for you. NZ and Canada are too much alike!

I'm from the US, have traveled extensively in NZ and Europe (and all across Canada too for that matter). I spent four months backpacking around NZ, so know it pretty well from a tourist point of view. NZ is a LOT like the northwest US or western Canada. I was living in the state of Oregon when I traveled in NZ - the two places are VERY similar: about the same size, about the same population, about the same climate, about the same scenery - mountains, glaciers, coastline, etc. (Think British Columbia for a general idea in Canadian terms - although I actually think parts of BC and Alberta are even more striking than a lot of NZ - and Vancouver is more interesting in the city category than Auckland in my book.) The vegetation and wildlife were quite different in the two places however.

I really liked NZ, and I certainly mean no disrespect to the place or people, but I would definitely vote for you seeing something more unlike what you can find at home (if you weren't from Canada I might give different advice).

You can get so much cultural and scenic variety at places in Europe in close proximity to each other. Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany - any or all of those just as a starting point...

Best of luck to you!

If your choice is England or NZ I would choose England ( even if your $ would go 3 times as far in NZ compared to the UK) but that would be only if you are from the West Coast of Canada.
I lived in Edmonton, Alta for 2 years and as the previous poster said the similarity between BC/Alberta highlands and NZ is quite marked. I also agree with the other comments as well that STW said. However, having said that, if you are from the eastern side of Canada and seeing that it will be November ( cold, wet and bleak in the UK and much nicer weather in NZ and your $ will go much further) I would choose NZ with perhaps a nice stopover en route in either Hawaii or Tahiti - depending on which airline you take.
I was in the UK 2 months ago and let me tell you that the cost of train travel is mind blowing - renting a car is prohibitive and accommodation is dreadful - that is before you eat! Australia, where I am, is much the same in money terms with Canada - price wise and so you would have the same shock as I did in the UK, to give you an idea it cost me $450Au or $400 Ca to take a bus from Victoria in London to Harwich and back from Harwich to Heathrow airport for 2 people. Approx distance was Vancouver to Whistler and back. Train is much the same cost. To do the same in Australia i.e. Brisbane to the Gold Coast and return is $18 or at the very most by bus is $30
You could also check out some of the flights from Canada to NZ which actually fly into Australia, Sydney or perhaps Cairns on the GBR)where you can stopover too.
Anyway whichever you choose - have a great time.
