Can We Use a U.S. Driver's License in NZ?

I went to rent a car from a NZ rental co. and they told me that I may need an International Driver's license to rent a car in NZ.

Has this been anyone else's experience?

Unless something has changed since April 2004, you should be fine with your US driver's license.

Hi Red,

No international driver's license needed; the only place this is "enforced" and I use the term loosely, is Italy where they just came up with that in the past year (and even then it's only if you're stopped for something, and "may" be liable for a fine).

Thanks for clarifying this -- hopefully this helps others who may be hearing similar things from rental car companies.

By the way, I'm using Omega Rental Cars -- has anyone used them before?

Well, it's not a license anyway, it's a permit (IDP), multilingual, not replacing yours. Kiwis will be able to read yours... Triple A are the only ones legally issuing it, for ten bucks, in case anyone is interested.
