We were in Sydney's New Years Eve in Dec 2007 !!!! The best fireworks in the world !! We saw them from a boat in the bay in front of Harbour Bridge.
Book the hotel well well in advance for the 31st and consider that average hotel cost increases by 2 o 3 times for that specific night and many hotels require a minimum stay of 3 nights but believe me it is worth !! An alternative to the boat cruise is to stay on the shores. There are several view points on the north and south shore and people start the acceess to these points already in the early afternoon, doing a sort of picnic with food, drinks and toilets till midnight. We did all the way from EU for just 9 days, all spent in Sydney, my favourite town in the world !
