Cairns/Port Douglas or Hamilton Island

Need some help. We are looking to see the GBR and spend some time relaxing in the middle of February. Would you recommend staying in Cairns/Port Douglas or on Hamilton Island?

Thoughts would be very appreciated. Have read so much and can't get to a final answer.

The middle of February is also only about the middle of the tropical "wet" season which can bring storms and possibility of cyclones and without those, high temperature and humidity.

Hamilton Island and Whitsundays are about 600km. south of Cairns/PD and generally has marginally better weather, and a lot better in case it gets a bit yucky further north, though I would not necessarily describe Hamilton Island as ideal for relaxing as it is very developed.

well I wouldn't be too influenced by the weather - after all its the tropics. February can be wet but it's hot and enjoyable too. Don't know anything about Hamilton Island personally but it doesn't look that attractive. Whereas Port and its environs have great places to stay and an exciting range of things to do. If you are a resort type then go to Hamilton but if you like a bit of individuality then its Port Douglas. Great places to stay around Port too plus access to the GBR is excellent

Yessiree, totally relaxing stuff if relaxing in a sauna and/or rain showers or more turns you on for relaxation.

Couple of years back there were some aussie tourists heading towards NO when Katrina was on its way and so what happened - they were holed up in that stadium until they could get out, but no such luxury in Cairns.

BTW, Australians in general had little sympathy for the bloody stupid twits doing that kind of stuff.

FNQ may not have the severity reputation of the GOM but heading there in February is on a par with heading the Gulf way in August.

Once again Bushranger shows his dislike for everything FNQ.
You would think it is the only tropical holiday location in Australia.
Yes some days it is hot & yes some days it is humid & believe it or not BR some days, even during the wet season, it is neither. like today & yesterday for example.
I think you have been wrecked once to often on Great Keppel Island.
which by the way has had it's share of cyclonic activity in the past.
And leave poor Osprey2 alone you big bully.

And who's the BB Webby?
And for YR, I don't mind FNQ at all and have even been to the top of Mt. Sorrow to stick my head above the clouds of the day to get a great view of the reefs, that being in May and still drank about 4l of water on the way up.

There's just good times, better times and worse times to go anywhere and talking about what you might have right now as against mid February is a tiny but rediculous!, and shows a certain quality of mind.

So BS have you spent much time in FNQ in Feb?
Please be reasonably honest.
