Cairns / Outback
Does anyone have tour names or ideas for a DAY trip from Cairns to the Outback? Thanks

There's probab;ly two main destinations, Undara Lava Tubes which really ought to be a minimum two day trip
or the Chillagoe Caves area and a tour taking in other places of interest.
. being one organisation for that.
Possibly a couple of others if you google Chillagoe Caves.

I notice that you have emphasised a DAY trip which is rather limiting as every one thinks that the 'outback' starts further out than they live.

It depends on what you want from the 'outback' but if it is the rural experience you might have a look a Wetherby Station. I have camped and eaten there but have not taken part in any of their tourist activities. the owners and staff are very pleasant. There are a couple of tours which run there but start here

I guess the danger of relying solely on the internet is that its likely to come up with obsolete and very out-of-date information.

The Chillagoe trip on the palmcove website supplied by Bushranger has not run for years; the only day trip to Chillagoe from Cairns including Mareeba Wetlands is Billy Tea Safaris: This tour leaves Cairns on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, if this timing doesn't suit it would be worth talking to Billy Tea as they may be able to arrange another day. For additional information about Chillagoe and surrounding areas see, a current website, Jim Evans is very helpful.

Undara no longer runs a day trip from Cairns, overnight packages are available leaving Cairns 3 days a week and returning the next, serviced by Greyhound bus, which lets you out at Undara turnoff where you'll be picked up by staff from Undara.

Several years back I did a daytrip to Undara from Cairns in a little plane. If anyone is still running that trip, it was a great way to do it. We flew in in the morning, and were picked up by the hotel out there. We had a tours of the lava tubes, then back to the hotel for lunch. Tons of wallabies hanging out there, and we took a walk up a hill where you could see lots of different old volcanoes if my memory serves. We also saw kangaroo out on the walk as well as a deafening chorus of cicadas, just out of their hard "shells" attached to the trees. Then we flew back to Cairns around 2 pm. A little "outbackness" in a little time.

I've been to Undarra, and enjoyed it greatly. It's worth spending a night there. The lava "tubes" are caves big enough to drive a truck down.

Chillagoe was nice too - great limestone caves.

sunscrg, I've taken the flight over to Undara in light aircraft from Cairns and back also, with visiting friends who hadn't time for the 4 hour each way drive. According to Rhonda at Undara, flight is no longer available which is a shame.

The "Outback" basically starts just west of Kuranda. That being where the rainforest stops and dry shrubland take over. this gets drier and thinner until it's virtually desert in central queensland. So theoretically anything west of Kuranda could be called outback. Any tours that include Kuranda and the Atherton tablelands in one day will travel through some of this country see or
