cairns in march? help?

Author: flora
Date: 01/24/2005, 07:21 amMessage: This is a follow up from my own previous question and others re the suitability of spending time in this area at this time. Some people seem to suggest it will be very unpleasant with rain heat and humidity.Others dispute that. I'm confused. Can someone help me out here. Would it be better to head south of Brisbane? What would the weather be like down there at that time? We do want sea swimming reading a book on beach and good food but on the other hand Daintree and Cape Tribulation sound great places to see. We'll have spent the previous five days in the Margaret River area and after Queensland are spending five days in Sydney by the way. Help!!Panicking a bit now.

Flora, the one thing that I will say is that the GBR is one of the Natural Wonders of the World if that gives you any idea of why you should go there.
March is a nice month to be there - perhaps not the best month but should be nice anyway.
At this present moment the whole of the Queensland coast with the exception of the far north is under a monsoonal/cyclonic weather pattern and this is effecting the weather ( high winds and heavy rain ) right into New South Wales or something like a 2,000 mile area. Melbourne is expecting 36 Celcius today but on the other hand we are expecting 27deg C. What I am trying to say here is that you can never rely on the weather wherever you decide to go.
Perhaps it would be best to listen to Pat's ideas on a March visit to Cairns as she is the one who lives there and should know as she would have been there for a number of March months to be able to give you a good idea. Let me know if you want her direct email address and I will give it to you OR you can write to her direct on this forum. Oh by the way, I didn't say that I have never been to Pat's Lilybank B&B I just said that my plans to visit this year have not been finalized and that I was going to the Whitsundays in March - if I didn't think that the weather would be nice I wouldn't be going there then. I will be there 15 - 19th incl. March

Dear Flora, I am having the same problem. I am planning an 8-day trip in early February, which includes 4 days at GBR. I realized the weather problems after I had already purchased the tickets. I am debating whether I should change to south/west Australia or stick to GBR. Help please! Thanks.

Flora,
Panic is the very last thing one should do in an emergency situation.
If you panic you loose.
It‘s as simple as that.
There is a doctor performing open heart surgery on a patient
The patients breathing becomes erratic, fast then slow, then stops.
The doctor throws a tantrum; the anesthetist starts to get it all wrong under pressure from the doctor who has lost it.
The nurses begin to pass the clamps instead of the suction.
During the bedlam some one kicks the lever which lets the operating platform down to ankle level. The drips are pulled from the patient as the platform falls; the platform breaks the leg of the anesthetist.

With your holiday up here in North Queensland during March this is what you should do
First of all don’t panic.

Do not book any thing at all unless the people you are booking with promise your money back if you decide not to come up here.
The cairns area is full of hotels which will all be empty during March.
You will obtain a very good hotel in the middle of town for less than $140.00 per night.
The hotel will have restaurants, pools, gyms, etc etc.

March will be very very wet like every other March for the last 6 million years.
IT’S THE WET SEASON. IT WILL BE RAINING.
We have two seasons in North Queensland.
The Wet and the Dry.
However, if you are lucky you might get a couple of days here and there which are beautiful. If you are in Sydney or Perth and you look at the weather and see we have good weather up here jump on a jet and come on up. From Sydney it’s two hours.

The boats will be empty, as the hotels will be empty. Don’t fall for the old excuse book now or you might miss out. During other months this may be true. But certainly not during March. Book direct with companies who guarantee your money back if you choose not to come.

As I have said here on this forum before, why would you fly out of the Southern States to come to the North if we have a cyclone or if we have what we have had here for the last 10 days.

Yes we have had a couple of days of good weather in the last 14 but even then we have had strong winds from the North West for this whole period. The reef is stirred up, the visibility is bad, and it’s raining. It’s the wet season.

If you were here now, you would enjoy the rainforest, but the reef is shot.

We have had a couple of days of roads closing although that does not happen these days as much as it once did. Not because it rains any less. It’s just that the roads are now better.

Yobfeer.

Flora

I went on to the airline site one day and they had super specials and I was drawn in like a fly to a cob web.

They had super cheap fares to Cairns in February so I booked.

One hour later I was regretting my decision. Sorry make that 5 minutes later. Anyhow I am off to Tasmania in March and Feb was the only window of opportunity I had to take advantage of cheap fares.

So off I go with my el cheapo ticket wondering, then I figured, hey I am going when it is what the North Queensland is all about. I am not going when it is a semi copy of other places. I am going when it is Wet Tropic definition time.

So now I am so excited I regret just booking for a long weekend.

Seing a place in it's defining moments is really seeing the place. For real !

GO FOR IT!!
