Broome and Cape Leveque
 

After struggling with our OZ itinerary for a while, I finally decided to go to Broome for 4 days in September. We are planning to spend two days at Cape Leveque. Has anybody been? How was the drive? How long did it take? I will appreciate any information that you might have.

Hi Alisa - Yes we drove from Broome to Cape Leveque a few years ago. It's a 4WD red dirt graded road and a long drive. It took us a good part of a day - 220 kms if I remember. I do remember there's no fuel stops on the way up and you may need to purchase fuel from the nearby aboriginal community on your way back to Broome dependent upon your vehicle's fuel capacity.

Cape Leveque is beautiful and well worth the drive depending upon the time you have. We camped at Kooljaman but they also offer cabin & safari tent type accomm. It's not a flash resort type of place - very simple but the beaches make up for what may lack in comfort or luxury accomm. The beaches are pristine and stretch for miles, the water aqua blue and weather consistently sunny and hot. The sunsets are beautiful!

If you don't fancy the long drive - you can fly up to Cape Leveque from Broome. Several day trippers flew in during our few days stay. There's an airfield right next to the camping ground.

It's a very special place and well worth the visit!

Emuu, thank you for the info. I already have booked a safari tent! Did you stop anywhere on the way to Cape Leveque? Did you take any tours while at Kooljaman?

During the drive up we did stop at the Willie Creek Pearl Farm not too far out of Broome - 40 kms north. The other place of interest to see (but we didn't stop there) is the Beagle Bay aboriginal community - see attached link http://www.totaltravel.com.au/travel...ide/beagle-bay

alisa23-the flight up with King Leopold Air is worth the bucks.

We were planning to hire a 4wd but the road was closed for some reason I cannot remember, in Jan 2003. There can be delays due to the road conditions and if your time is limited the flights are better.

Cape Leveque is one of our most amazing destinations in this, my amazing homeland! Have a great time and enjoy one of Australia's most beautiful and unique places.

An update to our trip. We ended up driving from Broome to Cape Leveque. The drive was difficult but definitely doable. My main concern was getting a flat tire but I did not see anybody with that problem. The ride is just noisy and bumpy because you are driving on packed sand. We really liked Cape Leveque. Not many people, very beautiful.

If you do go, bring your own food! The restaurant is fine for dinner but pretty bad for lunch. Also on some nights the rest. was closed. One could order raw dinner then, and cook it themselves but having your own food would be cheaper and give you more options.

Wasn't one of the Napoleon Bonaparte mysteries set in Broome?
