What a difference a month makes..... it’s so hot, sticky hot. We’re shattered, overnight in Perth , 6am flight to Broome. If you are ever in Perth overnight, the Country Comfort motel was excellent. C/w airport shuttle.

Landed in broome and we were treated with the heat, Perth was quite cool. Landed at 8.30am, by the time we collected the car, the van and did some quick shopping we got away about 11. Made it to Fitzroy Crossing for the night. Staying in the same park we did on the way over but it’s very different as it’s practically empty. Had a drink and a pizza in the park bar/restaurant.... crazy expensive but too tired to care.

Tomorrows plan is to make it to Kunanurra in time to watch the AFL (Australian rules football) grand final. It’s about a 7 hour drive but we’ll be on the toad early.

Stayed there once, glad to hear it's still a good choice!

good to know that we are back on the road but that bridge was narrow!

Where to next I wonder!

Made it to Kununurra yesterday afternoon, stayed in the lovely park on the lake. As it’s off season and very quiet we got a lovely shady lakeside site. Although it really was too hot to go outside. We fired up the aircon and plugged the tv in. Settled in for the second half of the game.

Kununurra really is a nice outback town, lovely lake and lots and lots of green grass. Just makes it feel cooler.

Had a very early breakfast by the lake and we were on the road by 5.30. Such a lovely time of day to be on the road. We took two way radios with us on our original trip, to keep in touch with our travel mates. They really proved invaluable and surprisingly they are again. We are just sticking to the ‘truckies’ chanel and it’s been very handy , once a truckie gave us the heads up about horses on the road and twice we’ve been able to communicate with extra wide loads. Which has given us time to get right of the road. They are really courteous too which is nice.

We stopped in Katherine at lunch time ... refuel us and the car stopped off at Maturanka and had a swim at the thermal pools. Opted for Bitter Springs which was lovely. Just a couple of kms off the road, a short walk then you are greeted with quite the oasis. Steps into the spring, then the currant takes you about 500m downstream. You climb another set of steps, walk back along a concrete path and do it all again. Just lovely.

Spending rhe night behind the Historic Daley River Pub. It really is worth a google. Very Australian. It’s really warm but we are out in the breezy beer garden with about 50 others watching our second grand final for the weekend. Very early start tomorrow, dh not happy with the way the car is running in the heat of the day. Sigh, fingers crossed we make it home.

Sos call to our mates and they’ve offered to come and ‘get’ us and the van, should the need arise. Gotta love good firends.

Love the photo of the kangaroos. Joining you for the rest of the ride.

Those pools look great but crocs? i might not have been quite so relaxed.

Hope the car makes it.

love_travel_Aus Sep 30th, 2018 11:14 PM

Yes those pools do look refreshing but I don't think I could relax next to that croc sign!

I recall a lunch stop many years ago at Daly Waters pub - and now I see it even has a website.
How times change as it was pretty simple then.
Gorgeous bougainvillea...

Beautiful Kununurra shots making a drive up that way pretty tempting once we get to retirement.

Mmm all the best with the car in the heat.

Firstly.... I promise we aren’t dare devils. We were assured it was safe and currently croc free.

Not much to report over the last couple of days. Lots and lots of driving. We drove as far as Camooweal last night, stayed behind the pub. Great spot...much appreciated refreshing pool and reallly really cold beer. It’s been so hot.

This morning we got a nice early start and drove for 11 hours. Not gonna lie.... my butt is numb. Stopped off at the Crocodile Dundee Walk About Pub. So iconic, really glad we did this.

Tonight we we are back in Barcaldine, staying at the show grounds again. Not quite the same without our mates though and even the Roos aren’t here.

Ive got a feeling we will be in our own beds tomorrow night. Sigh.

I am interested in what you say about its being so hot as really it is only the equivalent of our April, therefore early to mid spring; what must it be like in December /January, I wonder? we were in Northern Queensland in November a few years ago and that was hot but not, I am understanding, as hot as Western Australia. I'm putting June/July down as a good time to visit there if I ever get there.

Hope the end of the journey is not too much of a trial!

aussiedreamer Oct 2nd, 2018 11:34 AM

Hi Ann. Dec/Jan would be unbearable... it would be the wet season. So hot and humid. Hence the reason it’s the ‘off’ season. It’s incredible how much it’s changed from the start of the trip, most of the side trips and excursions we did are already ‘closed for the season’ From Broome across to Mount Isa was consistently 39 deg ( and your right, it’s only mid spring) but now we’ve dropped down into Qld more it’s about 32. Last night was delightfully fresh.

tripplanner001 Oct 2nd, 2018 11:46 AM

We visited Uluru in early December a few years back and remember how hot it was - mid-40s I believe - but it wasn't too bad for us as there was little to no humidity. Your comment about the heat in Western Australia in November has me concerned though, Ann, as we will be there in just a few weeks time; we'll be down in the Perth area so I'm hoping we will be far south enough as well as close enough to the water that there will be respite.

annhig Oct 2nd, 2018 02:46 PM

Tripplanner - I have no experience of it myself but judging by the temps that aussiedreamer is reporting, they would be a worry for me.

Concerned that I had worried you unnecessarily, I decided to look at the average temps and they don't look too bad:

But I would listen to the locals, rather than tables or me.

aussiedreamer Oct 2nd, 2018 04:53 PM

Don’t panic, you’ll be fine. Broome is approx 2000+kms above Perth. Similar to the difference in Brisbane temps to Melbourne’s. November in Perth will be lovely.
