Brisbane/Gold Coast : Apartments & Transportation

We'll have 6 days in the Brisbane area.

I have been told that there are excellent apartment properties in the Main Beach/Surfers area, that are closer to the beach, less expensive, have rooms with better views, etc. vs. staying at a hotel. Anyone with some experiences in these apartments and places I can search?

Also: what about transportation between the beaches and a day or two in the city? Are the bus/train connections easy enough? I don't think I'll want to rent a car.
Try www.jasons.com for information in Queensland and the Gold Coast. The Southport area is a good place to stay - it's midway along the Gold Coast strip and has a very large shopping centre with cinemas, restaurants etc, plus Jupiters Casino.
There is a train from Brisbane to Robina with buses connecting to the coast - haven't used it myself so can't give any more information. There are bus services along the main coast highway, so it is not a problem to visit other parts of the area.
It's about an hour's drive from Brisbane so I'd suggest two nights in Brisbane then go to the Gold Coast rather than going to and fro.
Hope this helps.

Hello there
Whilst Main beach and Surfer's Paradise is the centre of things from a tourist point of view ( mainly for the Asian tourist) the best accommodation area is around Broadbeach - particularly the Oasis centre which is across the road from the beach and has lots of lovely open air cafe's and restaurants, mono-rial, the Casino across the road a just a tad further along is the largest shopping centre on the coast - Pacific Fair.
Southport is a run down second rate area and has nothing going for it and is not within walking distance of the beach.
The Phoenician is a complex that comes to mind but there are many, many of them. Do a search of the Gold Coast and check out that area.

Yes Liz is quite right - I got my Broadbeach and Southport mixed up.

Gee Marg, you would have had them joining the dole queues at Southport.
