Breakfast in Melbourne
 

We are Melbourne-bound and would like to get some recommendations for good places to have breakfast in Melbourne. We are staying at the Langham which is near the Southgate Complex so a few within walking distance of that would be particularly useful. However, we would travel farther for someplace with a great view or really interesting menu.

Step outside the door and you will have many places to choose from with excellent views. If you want to venture further (about a 10-15 min walk)the European on Spring St. serves a pretty good breakfast with great coffee.

Pellegrinis has fabulous coffee at 66 Bourke st. The lunch dishes are always great value and really tasty but I'm not sure what they do for breakfast. They open at 8 AM, Mon-Sat.

Worth a trip is Brunetti's in Farady st Carlton, again it's Italian. Great for pastries, the do fabulous custard filled things--as good as you get in Italy! Makes me want to get on a plane just thinking about them...

Is there a good breakfast place by the beach in the St. Kilda area?

The Beachcomber at St.Kilda sea baths right on the beach is the place you are looking for. There are many options at Crown, but why leave The Langham it is one of the best hotels in town!

This may not suit but it is loved by those who know it or just visit as a tourist and it is the Farmers Market at the Collingwood Childrens Farm held on the 2nd Saturday of every month between 8am and 1pm . It costs $2 to enter .The Farm Cafe does wonderful breakfasts .It is 4km from the centre of the city by an easy taxi ride and is set on the Yarra River on the site of a grand old convent .Very charming and lovely produce for sale so you could buy things to snack on later see www.mfm.com.au

Actually the market would be a great place to go for breakfast and to experience Melbourne. Unfortunately, we are going to be there earlier in the month.

Neither a great view nor cutting edge menu, but along the lines of JohnFitz's suggestion - another option is the Queen Victoria Markets. Right in town & one of the best you'll find anywhere. www.qvm.com.au

One of my favourite Melbourne things - go early, wander through the food stalls until all those wonderful aromas lure me out to one of the cafes surrounding it for a "big breakfast". Nothing twee here; this is real workmens' country and you'll have a hearty breakfast - or choose a still warm croissant, pain au chocolat & a coffee.

The deli sections are a standout and I can never resist taking a selection home. At the moment, from 1200kms away, I'm thinking of mascapone & ginger stuffed figs ... perhaps just one as I decide between the anchovy stuffed olives,3 different proscuito crudo; an Edith ash rolled goat cheese and a big pongy Milawa Gold ... aaaaahhhhh Melbourne!

Oh and don't forget the non-food items - there are sheds & sheds of intersting stuff. I'm still wearing the most luscious red leather coat (kid) I bought there some years ago, and last year some wonderful North African ceramic bowls. And, on the corner the best collection of teapots & coffee makers you can imagine.

OTOH, there are some nice spots within the Southgate precinct - just wander along until you find one you like overlooking the river.

Acland Street St Kilda is packed with wonderful European cafes serving all manner of luscious breakfast options - sit in the sun, read the paper, people watch.

Oh our great minds are simpatico again Bokhara as before I saw your post and as I was reading mscarls I thought of the QVM and straight afterwards there was your tip .

I heartily endorse it as a nice option .

Another variation might be the South Melbourne Market as there are excellent cafes for breakfast in the streets opposite or alongside the Market particularly in Coventry Street which also has wonderful small shops .

It is an easy walk from the Langham or a very short taxi ride if it is wet etc .

Also lovely spots in Clarendon Street which is where the tram runs. The market has been on that site for 130 years although was rebuilt and is a bit ugly but it is a good little market .

A " smarter " market is Prahran in Commercial Road . Really great produce , excellent gourmet foods and shops and you are in the midst of fabulous shopping all along Chapel Street and other cafes outside the door or in the courtyard of the Market . So , if you felt like seeing that part of town it is a good option .Open Tuesday , Thursday and Friday - dawn to 5pm , Friday -dawn to 6pm . Saturday -dawn to 5pm and Sunday -dawn to 3pm.

It is a nice tram ride down St Kilda Rd from the Arts Centre to get to it or if you are adventurous the number 78/79 tram route runs along Chapel Street from Victoria St North Richmond ( Little Vietnam) and all the seconds stores ( Swan and Bridge Roads )and past high end furniture etc stores in Church Street .Once you cross the river it becomes Chapel St. and continues its whole length for kilometres ending up outside Luna Park and the beach front in St Kilda . If not in a rush ( it is estimated to take about 30 minutes on a good run and no delays but I reckon allow an hour if not getting on and off or more if you want to get on and off ,it is a great trip through quintessential inner Melbourne. So you could easily go to the market for breakfast and then get on a tram at the corner of Chapel St and Commercial Rd or just walk around a bit in whatever direction takes your fancy as it is all good .

Ahhh, this thread transports me back to the QVM, where I had the creamiest ever yogurt with fresh passionfruit on top. Positively orgasmic.
