And of course Toronto or any C/NM people will love Mexico or anywhere south in winter just as people from the south of Australia and colder climes overseas will love fnq in our southern winter months

If latitude, or degrees from the equator is your criterion for weather, perhaps you could explain why maximum temperature in Cairns today was 31C and 33C in Melbourne.

What was your humidity reading today Pat? and what do you think it might have been in Melbourne?

And then if you want to take the ding ding winners Toronto to Mexico moves into account, Toronto is about the same latitude as southern Tas and Tropic of Cancer passes through about middle of Mexico for what it is worth.

But for now, just stick with humidity comparisons.

I know tourism is in dire straights all over but do you not think it a little remiss to have abn open mind.

I am not desperately trying to attract anybody anywhere but just try and give people a realistic appreciation of what they may face wherever they go if it is relevant to their enjoyment.

Yesterday relative humidity in Cairns was 55%, about the same as Sydney and more than likely higher than Melbourne. But hardly overwhelming and of no consequence when in the water, am sure you must be aware that GBR is main attraction here.

Reef conditions now are about as perfect as you'll get all year, which is why many reef boats out of Cairns are fully booked for today, even with tourism in "dire straights"(sic).

I too try to give people a "realistic appreciation" of what weather they may expect too, and if you'd been reading this forum for more than about a minute you may have noticed that I've often mentioned the possibility of SE's in winter months. Not always conducive to an enjoyable reef trip.

Its you who seems to have a vested interest in turning people off FNQ, so don't be surprised when people who choose to live here come to its defence.

Whereas you can get temperatures higher in Melbourne than what Cairns may be having at any particular time through late spring and summer by virtue of the southern climate greater variability, and yes I have been there for 40+ summers and rain/dust forming mud falls on Melbourne Cup Day, I would totally agree with you that 55% humidity would rarely if ever be seen as far south as Melbourne.

Actually, one of the Cairns portals was only showing 49% there and that would be far more pleasant I'm ready to admit than what Brisbane at something near 70% would have been, for we both know it is the humidity more than anything that can be the issue.

There are also many Cairns Info sites as you would know, some giving briefer information or none at all, but http://www.cairnsinfo.com/weather.php gives something of a locally generic insight.

Ironically, quikcast with the most info starts off with a bit of balst you may agree!

Bushranger, we are not shying away from the fact that Cairns can be hot, humid & wet during summer and have never stated this is not the case.
What we are taking offence to is your suggestions that people should avoid the place at all costs, and that they would be better off going to Great Keppell.
You have made no mention of the wonderful waterfalls, rainforests (don't grow well in Gladstone) freshwater lakes & gorges that come alive during the wet & are easily accessed from Cairns.
If the coastal humidity becomes too much then the cooler, scenic & less humid Atherton Tablelands are only an hours drive away.
No mention of these from you when people ask for advice on Cairns. Nope lets talk about the weather, make it sound unbearable & suggest they go to Lady Elliott Island.
What proof do you have that the owners & authors of the last link you mentioned live in Cairns or even Qld. for that matter? You are drawing a very long bow when saying this site "gives you a locally generic insight"
Stop putting unnecessary negative thoughts into peoples minds who have already made the decision to travel to Cairns, and are well aware of the conditions they will find when they arrive.

Go back and read my first post and I've not said anything about not going.
Yo seem to thrive on picking up references from other threads but if you did it thoroughly you may even find some answers yourself more easily and save you having to post asking or inferring.

Bushy, as you preferred to be called, you should do some of your own research & go back & read your posts. You might see what Pat & I are talking about.

Thank you for your posts; I never read them till today & alas, never made it to Aus. Death in the family BUT I had to laugh out loud! I thought only Canadians argued over weather: "my humidex is bigger than yours"! etc. So all info much apprciated & now that I have longer to plan I'm going to look into 3 day scuba onboard - a great idea. I'm in good shape so I don't think I'm in any fear of death by scuba but jellyfish? not so keen. I do burn like a cooked lobster so I wear 65 sunblock & maybe a milder time of the year is more for me.

Going to Cairns & renting a car was part of my idea to try & see as much as I could & qantas offers a flight to Aus with 3 stopover flight included! So I'd book it all through from here.

Thanks agin & I'll be back ti pick this up shortly but have 8 days in Amalfi Coast to finish booking first!
