Bondi-Coogee Beach walk
 

Can anyone tell me a bit about this walk?

How long does is take to get there from the harbour area using public transportation?

Also, how long is the walk, and is it easy to catch transportation back at the end?

Would morning or afternoon be a better time to do this?

It's about 6k and takes a couple of hours - but do allow longer so you can have a coffee at Tamarama or Bronte on the way.

Here's what a friend & I did one sunny Sunday in May:

1. Walked from the Chelsea Guesthouse (Darlinghurst) to Art Gallery of NSW - about 20 mins.
Spent about 90mins in the gallery.
Had a coffee - overlooks the Harbour and Wooloomooloo. There is also a very good bistro in the Gallery.
Directly opposite in the Domain Park is an excellent restaurant (Pavillion on the Park) which also has a little kiosk.

2. Walked through the Botanic Gardens to the Opera House, wandered around the open air markets. There's a good restaurant in the Gardens, lovely verandah setting and last time I was there, excellent food. Downstairs there is a v.casual take-away section with some tables & chairs.

3. Followed the colonaded path to Circular Quay, checked the timetable for Watsons Bay and, having 30 minutes to kill, walked around to the Museum of Contemporary Art, enjoying the street theatre, buskers & the ferries, jetcats & river cats buzzing around the harbour.

4. Ferry Circular Quay to Watsons Bay.

5. Lunch at the Watsons Bay Hotel. Very casual & good quality food. Order at the open kitchen upper deck (gun barrel views straight down the harbour to the Bridge), choose a table while your lunch is cooked. Wines etc., by the glass as well as bottle.

6. Walk along the cliffs to see The Gap. On another occasion, or had we been there with more time to spare, we probably would have explored some of Watsons Bay and the little bays which are really charming. But on this day, we wanted to do the Bondi-Bronte walk, so took the
7. Bus to Bondi Beach (Bus stop is at the top of the rise to the left of the Hotel). I think it takes about 10 - 15 minutes.
8. Walk Bondi to Bronte - coffee in one of the cafes at Bronte. I think it took us about an hour - it was spectacular as we had all those Monet colours of pinks fading into blues & melding into the sea as the sun went down.
9. Bus back to the city.

It was just one of those magic days. Sydney was showing her best side & sharing it with a visitor refreshed my awareness of just what a really lovely city it is.

This is a wonderful walk, particularly on a sunny day. The walk is about 5 or 6 kms and not too strenuous, apart from a couple of hills. It is paved all the way. There are cafe's and shops along the way at Tamarama and Bronte if you need refreshments. It should take you about an hour to hour and a half depending on how fast you walk and how long you stop if at all. Buses go from Circular Quay to Bondi Beach frequently (like every 5 mins). It will take about 1/2 an hour to get to Bondi Beach. You can also catch a bus back from Coogee to Circular Quay. takes about 3/4 an hour. If you don't want to do the whole walk you can catch a bus bcak from Tamarama, Bronte or Clovelly beaches also.

It's too bad, because we leave on Oct. 12--would have loved to see the sculptures by the sea!

It's a glorious walk. Make sure you stop and have a coffee & bite to eat at Salinas in Bronte. I take all my visitors there - incredible views, good food and great hosts. As you are doing the walk, you can justify the food.

Will we just "bump into" Salinas while we are walking? or do I need to know where it is ahead of time?

You should bump into it. On the south side of Bronte Beach there's a row of restaurant/cafes looking north over the beach. Salinas is at the left hand side.

yep an easy walk bar a couple of steep flights of stairs here and there
when youre going to coogee you will have to walk the streets for a bit
dont leave the walk too late
can be a tiny bit creepy walking back thru clovelly cemetry
(one time an american tourist asked if she could walk back with my OH and me...she was a bit apprehensive as it was getting on dusk)
there are plenty of people walking though...and in summer it gets dark round 8 or so
in winter around 5pm
