Bicheno or Freycinet/ Coles Bay area
Hi Everyone
Again I have to ask for more recommendations. We are thinking of staying 2 nights at either Coles Bay/ Freycinet or Bicheno - our stop between Launceston and Hobart airports. Does anyone have any recommendations for good self catering/ family type accommodation in either place. While the Freycinet area has bowled me over with its beautiful beaches/ walks, I read that you can do a penguin tour thing at Bicheno. That may be fun for the kids. Am worried about driving back in the dark after the tour if I do not stay at Bicheno itself. In terms of activities and accommodation, which is a better bet (or are they both comparable). Am looking forward to some place laid back with great views. While the resorts like edge of the bay and freycinet lodge are what I envisioned, their prices unfortunately are not in our budget. We are travelling as a group of 8 (6 adults, four of whom are retirees, and 2 young children). Thanks |
Bicheno is okay, but I would pick Coles Bay, more to see, especially Wineglass Bay. Don't forget about the great oysters nearby, before you get to Coles Bay.

itwk, there's another recent thread on this subject dated 03/05/08 if you can't make the search function work. "Freycinet area - selfcatering".
Personal preference is Coles Bay with boat or walking track to Wineglass Bay and other spectacular walks in Freycinet Nat Park. |
Hello itwk, this is my comment on the other thread...
Author: ozgirl Date: 03/05/2008, 01:53 am Hi again John, I found it... http://www.freycinetrentals.com/index.htm - we stayed in the one called "the Views" (2 bedroom not 3 as I said previously.) It was not luxurious but very comfortable and had nice water views (not absolute waterfront but very short walk.) It was also not far from the shops and a short drive (or you probably could walk) to Freycinet National Park from where one can walk to Wineglass Bay. Good luck. Bicheno is also lovely but I would probably recommend Coles Bay. The above website has a variety of different houses some that would accommodate all 8 if that's what you are after. |
hi i'd like to ask for any tips on the same question as itwk's( sorry to barge in) but for a woman solo traveler...i'd love to walk freycinet park/ wineglass bay... thanks janine

Thanks everyone. Well, I am also inclined towards the Coles Bay area.
