I know what you mean Mel, that warbling sound they make is lovely. When we lived in Melbourne, my husband, who is a very patient man, coaxed our resident magpies to take food from his hand. It got so as soon as he stepped outside, they'd be on the lawn looking out for treats.

Thinking about it, some of the Australian bird sounds are pretty unique. The screeching of cockatoos in flight?

Yes on the quokkas, KayF, and that kookaburra is one handsome fella, Melnq8.

Cockatoos, yes! I will always remember my first time seeing them in captivity on Kangaroo Island and in the wild hanging out at the Botanic Gardens in Sydney.

I agree that WA is one vast place; I hope to make it to the Kimberley someday.

These guys never failed to make me laugh. To my European ears, they sound like a human imitating the call of a (European) crow.

Great photos. I remember being impressed with Mirror Lake when we went as kids. Need to return.

I haven't visited Ireland but does Bannockburn look a bit like Ireland? Or maybe Scotland?

I haven't been to Ireland either. I've been to Scotland though, but all I saw there was rain and grey skies!

Great photos everyone, thanks. A couple months ago we were tentatively making plans to return to Australia later this year, but not going to happen now. Nice to see the photos!
