August in New Zealand- worth it????

we are planning a three week trip next august. we would love to see new zealand, but want to know how limited we will be because of the weather. we want to hike, not ski! thinking of combining it with 7-10 days australia (sydney, great barrier reef, cairns area). thanks very much, cathy

Hi Cathy,
Yes, August is still a great time to visit New Zealand. It's winter, and therefore ski season, but there are still plenty of walks to do.
In the South Island, the major walks like Milford Track, Routeburn, etc are closed, but there are various freedom walks you can do in and around Queenstown, usually lasting 2-5 hours.
There are many other activities that make Queenstown an ideal destination for more than skiing - jetboating, farm tours, wineries and wildlife to name a few.
B&Bs are usually quieter in winter, so may be prepared to offer you discounted rates on a stay longer than 2 nights.
Best of luck in your planning.
Jo

The weather will be cold in the South Island and wet in the North Island, so make sure you dress and pack accordingly.

Cathy,

August is definitely not one of the warmer months (around 45-55 F in the South Island) and would probably not be great for hiking given the cold weather you will get. You can get some idea at :

However, August is certainly a spectacular time of the year to visit New Zealand as the mountain ranges are covered in snow.
If you need any further assistance in planning your trip we would be more than happy to assist.
