I need some advice re. hotel recommendations in Auckland. I am on a budget, but quality is important. Thanks!

Swansea - try the Golden Chain Motel group for NZ, I think its www.goldenchain.co.nz
they will have plenty of motels in Auckland, which are graded blue or gold...if you want something with a little bit of quality pick the gold ones, and I am sure the overall cost will much less than that other Hotels.

If you don't mind a really really small room, last year I stayed at the new Hotel Formule 1 which has a great location right near Sky City. Comfy bed, your own bathroom. Last year it had a tiny kitchen (with NO pots or pans), TV, & washing machine and dryer which was handy. It's a bit strange in terms of amenities so be sure to read tripadvisor to get an idea of what you're in for.

It's listed on wotif although if you go direct to their site you probably get the same rate.

What is your expected budget, they vary widely in price?

have you considered a guesthouse/ bed and breakfast?
