Auckland Airport Info

If one flies into the domestic terminal but then connects to a flight out of the int'l facility, how much time is required to walk/ride there?

kiwi_rob Jan 10th, 2011 09:56 AM

It is a 10 to 15 minute walk, with plenty of luggage carts available free of charge. The path is well signposted (just follow the blue line on the pavement), but it is not covered.

There is a shuttle bus that runs frequently, but we never use it, unless it is raining. Even when it is wet, we usually do the walk between showers if possible, just to get a bit of fresh air and exercise.

Thanks kiwi_rob

My dilemma is whether we can connect to a AKL-SYD flight on Air NZ leaving at 9:00AM after arriving from Kirikiri at 7:50? They are two separate itineraries (one paid, the other using miles)so presumably we will have to check in for the int'l flight at the AKL airport. Does Air New Zealand allow on-line check in for int'l departures? That would help of course! fyi...We will have carry-ons only.

Any advice appreciated...alternative costs me us a whole day in SYD.

I had my carry-on luggage weighed twice at Auckland airport when flying AKL-SYD, so make sure you are not over the weight allowance.

That seems to me to be too tight, brinks. So far as I am aware, Air NZ does not have an on-line check in facility. You can do a self-service check in at Auckland, but that would still be very tight for time.

Your usual check in time is 90 minutes prior to departure. Assuming that your flight from Kerikeri is on time, by the time you disembark and get to the intn'l terminal, it will be around 8.10/8.15. You then have to check in, clear immigration and security and get to your departure gate. Air NZ may be prepared to hold the gate open for you, but I would check this with them as soon as possible.

We just had a similar experience with being pulled out of line and carry-on weighed. We were forced to check bag and it cost us 30-40 minutes and 75$. Your time frame seems really tight to me.

Thanks everyone - I am going to move our AKL to SYD flight to a later one - I appreciate you taking the time and also the insights re: carry-ons.

kiwi_rob Jan 11th, 2011 12:12 PM

I had forgotten about the carry-ons being weighed at Auckland. That is about the only airport here that does this. They seem to pick on wheeled carry-ons in particular, or any that appear to be bulky.

I have had that experience of ANZ weighing the wheeled carryons! And then repacking it into my checked luggage.

kiwi_rob Jan 12th, 2011 09:57 AM

At Auckland Airport, it is not the A NZ staff doing the weighing of the carry-ons, but the Auckland Airport staff. These people are standing inside the "Departing Passengers Only" area and grab you after you have completed check in. This could happen to you no matter which airline you are flying with.
