ATM in OZ & NZ with USA bank card

Hi again - Even before I ask my question I have to thank so many of you for all the wonderful information I am receiving here. I leave in 6 weeks and am very excited!!! Anyway, I've used our American Bank cards in Europe without a problem. Do they work as well in Oz & N.Z.? Wouldn't want to arrive and be out of money in 2 days. :) We really prefer to use ATM's instead of cash or travellers checks. Thanks

Hi Again, Sandy!
You will have no problems using your ATM card or any major credit card in Australia. I received a great rate of exchange and never paid more than US$2/transaction w/my ATM card.

Have a wonderful time! I can't wait to go back!!!!!!!

Debbie

I'm a local in Aus and have travelled to the United states and Britain. I never had a problem using my ATM card anywhere as most places accepted cards with the "Maestro Cirrus" symbols on them. I would imagine the same would apply to the likes of yourself visiting Australia. Hope this is of assistance.
Sandy,
Actually, you will find that the ATM system in NZ (called EFTPOS) is more advanced than in most of the U.S. Virtually every shop, even in out-of-the-way places, has an EFTPOS terminal (looks like a telephone with a long coiled cord) for making payments. Oz is pretty much like the U.S. - ATM machines scattered about, some stores take them. We traveled through NZ and OZ for 8 months and never used our travelers checks.
