Arthur's Pass - road or rail?

Is the TranzAlpine train journey through Arthur's Pass better than the road trip, or are they much of a muchness? If your primary interest was scenic photography would you drive or take the train?

I have never taken the train but have taken the road. My SO is a keen photographer and I think if you drive you are more in control of when to stop and for how long. I recommend a night at the Bealey Hotel, you'll get an amazing panoramic view from the bedroom.

We took the train and enjoyed it. But for photography, drive! ((*))

I vote drive. Many many places to pull over and absorb, photo, whatever. Little short walks to this or that. Another place to stay (high end) is Wilderness Lodge, Arthurs Pass. Quite an experience.

I've done both, and have to agree if you are a photographer, drive!

One of my favorite finds was Mountain House, which are cottages you can rent in Arthurs Pass village. You can rent either a room or the whole cottage. There's a living room with wood burning stove, and shared kitchen and baths. It's worth spending an overnight if you can get one of these. Oscar Haus/Wobbly Kea has great food, too.
