Arrowtown
I will find myself with some extra time in Queenstown in early November. Is a trip to Arrowtown a worthwhile thing to do? (I will have visited Shantytown in the Westland). Thanks for your suggestions.

I really like Arrowtown. It is a preserved 18th Century town and really very pretty. It is really only one street but it's nice to wander down, pick a spot for lunch and then perhaps have a drink in the pub (nice beer garden if it's a good day)before heading back to Queenstown.

Hi, suncityjim
Arrowtown is beautiful as Daneille says, and nothing like Shantytown. Beautiful tree-lined main street, and lots to look at in the area. 30 years ago, when our son was 5 months old, we did an amazing tour to Macetown, an old gold-mining town out the back of Arrowtown, and no longer in existence. We were able to see how the town lay, etc. It was an interesting trip out there too. Not sure if these trips are run any more, but if they were it could be worthwhile. |
Hi Sun,
Arrowtown is absolutely worth a visit; you can probably "drag main" in about an hour, as it's small, but very enjoyable. There are a surprising number of very good restaurants and bakeries for such a small town. As others have said, it's very quaint with a great deal of mining history (and you can pan for gold as well). Rumor has it that Saffron's restaurant, which you can find on the web, is a favorite of actor Sam O'Neil's. Dotty mentions Mace town, and there is still a tour out there with a 4WD through a company called Nomad Safaris. I'm leaving for NZ on Sunday and plan to check out both the restaurant and the tour company, so I'll let you know when I return! Regards, Melodie Certified Kiwi Specialist |
Have a great time, Melodie, and if you see Sam Neill, be sure to check him out as well. ;-)

Lee Ann,
If I see Sam O'Neil, you may never hear from me again! :) Oh wait...yeah, that's right, my husband's coming with me; oddly enuf, also named Sam -- that might come in handy! :) I will keep a lookout though, and if I have enough time I plan on checking out his winery as well! I didn't know he had a winery; what's it called?

Thank you to the respondents to my query. It looks like I'll be going to Arrowtown! Thanks again.

Melodie,
I just wanted you to know if you ever need anyone to carry your bags, I'm available. Have a wonderful time in NZ. AndrewDavid |
Hi Lee Ann,
Sam Neill's winery is called Two Paddocks. Link Below. http://www.twopaddocks.com/ I believe he has had success with his Pinot Noirs but I have not tried any so I cannot attest to their taste. Steve |
Thanks for the link, Steve! I'll have to see if anyone sells it in New Mexico. We enjoyed several bottles of NZ white wines while there, but didn't try any reds.
