Are GPS devices allowed on carry on?
I purchased a GPS device to use in Australia and was planning to take with me in my carry on bag. It just occurred to me that with the security paranoia it might not be allowed. Any ideas? Should I carry on or pack in the luggage and take my chance of loosing it in transit.

To be on the safe side, ask the airline(s) you are travelling with and your airport authority.

I routinely travel with a GPS pedometer in my carry on and it's never been a problem. Do GPS devices pose some sort of threat I'm not aware of?

In the wake of the underpants bomber some airlines have even stopped showing the map in the inflight entertainment, so they might be a bit leery about a more sophisticated locational device.

I found this information on Canadian Air Transport Security Site. It looks like it's OK to have it in carry on bag.
"Global positioning system (GPS) devices. We recommend keeping fragile or expensive items with you in your carry-on baggage. Check with your air carrier for restrictions on the use of these and other electronic devices during your flight." Z |
Granted it wa before the latest madness, but we traveled on 22 flights (about 17 different airlines) including Qantas and ANZ as we went around the world this past year with our GPS in our carry on computer bag. No one even gave it a second look.

I too, had a gps unit in my carry on when I travelled to unit. Wouldn't dream of putting in my checked baggage!

Whoops that should be when I travelled to Europe!

Didn't have any problems when we flew from Toronto to the Dominican Republic and back. On the return leg, much to the chagrin of my wife, I stuck the unit to the window just for curiousity factor. :)

We have flown between Brisbane/Sydney/LA and Brisbane/Christchurch this year with no problems having a GPS in our carry on luggage.

This seems no different to me than travelling with a laptop - periodically I am asked to take out my laptop, turn it on and demonstrate that it's just a normal working device, so I imagine they might do the same with a GPS.
