Antarctica Penguin Disaster
I'm guessing this Pacific forum is the best place for this article that appeared in Stuff NZ today, ,and Australia and NZ both have bases in Antarctica. Speaking personally, Antarctica has been at the top of my dream trip wish list for as long as I can remember (but trips are $$$). Just yesterday, I was saying to my husband that we should go soon, as the earth, ocean, and climate are changing so rapidly, not to mention the effects of overfishing. Then I read this today:

A very sad read Diamantina.
We too, have discussed visiting Antarctica, but the cost has discouraged us. |
But we are coming back to NZ in May - finally!
|
Oh that is sad news. I sometimes think tourism should be banned in Antarctica so the wildlife have a chance at survival. But this will never happen. Anyone read "The Lorax' by Dr Suess? We are getting close to that last truffula tree being chopped down!
Rising sea levels are a big concern here in NZ. Even a small rise would have a devastating effect. |
It's alarming how quickly things can change. You're right, Tasmangirl, rising sea levels are a major concern for NZ, particularly for coastal communities.
Glad you'll be returning, Melnq8. May's a good time, not crowded or busy — but you know this. I've known a few folks who've managed to find much cheaper last-minute fares on Antarctica cruises in Ushuaia, Argentina. Though I don't know if I would chance just going down there and trying this. I worry about seasickness on the cruise as well, but I think it's probably be worth it. |
Oh, sea sickness - my nemesis - you may have just talked me out of it.
