Alice to Kakadu: where to stop inbetween ?
 

Well, leaving Alice in the morning we will then come during the day at Devils Marbles, and then overnight in Tennant Creek (505km).
but then ?
Tennant to Katherine is quite longer, 687km, too long for one day ??!! Where would you stop for something to see or overnight ?

After Katherine we are planning at least 3 nights in Kakadu area. I have read positive reviews for Cooinda Lodge. We are interested in river cruises to see crocs, this is the highlight for our kids in this trip! Any other suggestion for wildlife viewing in Kakadu? Should we be hotel based in Cooinda for these 2-3 nights doing day trips/Tours or better to move somewhere else ?

There's not much in between is there? I seem to recall that we stopped the night in between at Daly Waters. However, we were fully self contained and could pull up pretty much anywhere.

I'm thinking you may all have to get up early and just do the trip in one day. It certainly is quite doable - you'll just sleep well that night, that's all.

It would be good if you could allow some time to call into Mataranka Springs on the way through - it's about 115km south of Katherine.

Three nights in Kakadu will keep you busy - as well as the river cruise there is Ubir Rock to climb (relatively easy) and you are rewarded with a spectacular view of the wetlands below and the Arnham Land escarpment.

Bird life in the park is abundant and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Also Nourlangie Rock and Billabong walk is excellent. Throw in a waterfall or two and it won't be hard to fill up your three days.

It's just my opinion, but I think Cooinda Lodge will put you in a pretty good position geographically within the park.

I loved Kakadu - I believe we had about 7 or 10 days there and we really had a great time. Hope you do too!

Somewhere along that road is a singing dingo (or drongo) or something!

I'm sure AndrewDavid will chime in with details. I've not seen it myself.

there is also Mataranka, about 100 km south of Katherine.
The Territory Manor at Mataranka is a quite good Motel.

The singing Dingo Margo mentioned is Dinky Di at Stuarts Well ( Jim's Place ) http://www.abc.net.au/nt/stories/s971318.htm

In Kakadu I prefer the Guluyambi Cruise on the East Alligator River to the Yellow Waters Cruise.

yes Dinky, the world famous singing and piano playing dingo of central australia is in residence at Stuert's Well. Unfortunately it is 90 km heading towards Uluru!
