Air New Zealand - knitting needles?

I was just checking the luggage weight restrictions at the Air New Zealand site, and was dismayed to find that knitting needles are considered 'sharp objects'. Is that really true? I've found that almost all airlines now allow knitting needles, knitting certainly helps while away the time on a long flight.

Does anyone know more about this?

Thanks,
Alice

I read the same thing on a couple of Ravelry's travel groups. I would call Air New Zealand to check.

One of the Ravelry posters got chopsticks and used them on a recent trip - maybe that could work? :-D

After having a few knitting needles confiscated, my wife got a set of interchangeable knitting needles which is advertised to be 'airline safe'.

I just returned from a month in NZ. Our ticket specifically listed knitting needles under "sharp objects" not allowed in carry on.

I checked out the Ravelry groups too, and I'm afraid to risk it, and don't have time to order a set of Denise needles. My knitting will go in my checked luggage, and I'll probably get very little done on this trip!

The real question is what I'm going to DO en route! Read, crosswords, listen to podcasts, maybe watch a movie, hopefully sleep - but I guess not knit, sigh.

Alice, if you're flying Air New Zealand, they have *tons* of entertainment options - individual seatback screens with lots of movies, music, games, etc. to choose from.

Have a great time, and be sure to tell us about the yarn shops! :-)

Sudoku, splurge on a Nintendo DS with the brain training programs.

I think I'll bring a small pile of New Yorkers that have been making me feel guilty for not reading them yet - lots of good reading material, easily disposable. And a deck of cards, I can probably talk my husband into playing gin for a while.

While my gorgeous cashmere scarf sits quietly in the cargo hold.

Hello Alice9:

Taking knitting to New Zealand!

Take your needles only and buy the best wool available once you are in NZ.

You will not be sorry. My wife bought some very fine wool that she was not able to find back home.

Hope this is of help.

You shoud have a great time in any case.

Hi Woodie -

Alice was concerned about taking knitting needles on the plane and knitting to 'while away the time'. Unfortunately, they are not permitted to be carried on board by AirNZ, but can be carried in the checked luggage. ((*))
