Adelaide to Camden(WHERE?)

Hi again!
Fodor's is always one of my first ports of call on planning a new trip!
We are going to Australia for the 3rd time at Christmas. Our son and his family live in Camden. We will be arriving & staying in Adelaide for a few days (2 or 3) and then driving GOR and then up to Camden.
How long would you allow - grandson insisting on earliest possible arrival!
We thought 2 nights for GOR - went to Melbourne last time, so no need to visit this time. How long from Melbourne to Camden? What to see on way? Where to stay?

Have always had great advice from this site. Thanks in advance.

Masha

That is Camden, NSW.
(In case there is another one!)

Camden is just SW of Sydney, not far off the main highway to Melbourne (the Hume Hwy). So the fastest route to Camden would be via Melbourne on the Hume Hwy. Camden is just over 800 kms (500 miles) from Melbourne by this route, a long day's drive, and not a lot to see unless you can spare the time for detours. At a minimum, I would plan on 3 days/2 nights for the entire trip (the GOR and the Hume Hwy to Camden). Taking more time - another day or two - would allow you to explore more thoroughly the GOR or detour to Canberra for a quick visit.

The other major route to Camden would be via the Princes Hwy, which generally follows the coast. While there is more to see this way, it is significantly longer and slower (about 1050 km, 650 miles)...you would need a minimum of 3 nights total and even then you'd be rushing somewhat.

I agree with RalphR it's a long drive and not a very scenic one. I have done it a couple of times in one day but it's exhausting. You could stop overnight in Canberra if you wanted to break it up. Have you thought about flying from Melbourne to Sydney?

Thanks guys

We landed in Melbourne last time and took a week to drive along coast from Melbourne to Camden.
This time landing in Adelaide and determined to see GOR!!
Where does GOR start outside Adelaide? How far in distance/time?
We do not propose to go into Melbourne this time but can strike off inland. All in all we would hope to do trip from Adelaide to Camden in 5/6 days. (Grandson insists on early arrival!)Is this reasonable?
We liked Canberra. Would not mind a stop there enroute. Any where else you would suggest on way from outside MElbourne to Camden?
Many thanks!
Masha

Ralph's suggestions are the main two ways to go. From the end of GOR near Geelong, you can go to Ballarat or Melbourne (note Geelong is south of Melbourne), going to Melbourne is by far the most direct route to Camden.

It might help you to work out your trip by looking at this highway map:

If you click on the various routes internal to the big map, it describes places you can/could stop.

Masha...from Adelaide you would typically follow the coast via the Princes Hwy to Warrnambool (about 650 km, 400 miles, 8 hours). The GOR proper starts here continuing to Port Campbell, Apollo Bay, Lorne and ending in Torquay, near Geelong. As you can see, it's a good day's drive from Adelaide to the beginning of the GOR. Warrnambool to Geelong, is about 250 km.
