Just for information, could you visitors or NZ chums tell us about the Car insurance requirements in NZ?

I recently read that Insurance is not compulsory in NZ. Several tourists have come unstuck because of accidents with uninsured drivers.

Is this true?
If so it could be useful information for people like sueger,it could influence the amount of insurance taken out when hiring a car in NZ.

One comment - The &quot;Class C- Large Sedan&quot; is a Toyota Camry, which is an intermediate size in the US, and also on the NZ National car site.

Obviously, 'class' is not standard, so better check the fine print.

To confuse matters more Jed, the Camry on their site is the 2 litre Japanese import (imported second hand from Japan). Whereas if you buy a new Camry such as my own it is either a 2.2litre or 3litre engine. The car size itself is a little bigger to, almost the same size as an Avalon.

Since they are comparing it to a Nissan Bluebird that gives away that it is a smaller car. Nissan Bluebirds are not big either.

Class H on their website is what an average NZer would class as a large car, A Ford Falcon.

Muck, you are right there is no law requiring you to buy insurance here, therefore there are a lot of uninsured drivers on the road. Rental car agencies generally encourage you to have at least the minimum insurance cover (Even if the excess is, well, excessive) Take the insurance option.

Even if a driver has no insurance. It does not extinguish their liability. They are persued for the money by insurance companies, individuals etc.

I know of someone who only last year finished paying off for damage to two cars crashed into by them when they had no insurance (They had let it lapse)

1- I have an Avalon, my wife has a Camry. To my body, the Camry is significantly smaller.

2- If you pay with some credit cards, you may be covered by their policy. My Visa covered possible collision costs in NZ. Medical costs were not covered.
