5 nights in melbourne - advice

hi there,
My friends and i are going to be spending 5 nights in melbourne in june. I'd really like to know what the weather is like during that time. Will there be a lot of rain? and also what day trips you recommend from the city? also is there a really good comedy club in melbourne?
Thanks so much

Hi Mignonne -

I live in Melb, and can answer some of your questions. The weather will be cool, and there is probably a good chance of rain somewhere in the 5 days - or it could pour for all 5 days - or it could be warm & sunny - or all of those in the same day. Melbourne weather is about as unpredictable as it gets (but my first comment about the weather is probably most accurate). For a good day trip you could go to the Great Ocean Rd., which is really fantastic (weather dependant), or to Phillip Island to see the Fairy Penguins, or if you like wine you could go to the Yarra Valley for a wine tasting tour. June isn't in the height of the tourist season, so if I were you I would check out the www.citysearch.com.au webpage for Melb (info on things to do + Comedy clubs - unfortunately the annual comedy festival just ended last week) and once you arrive, there is a Tourist bureau at the corner of Swanston & Lt. Collins st. in the middle of the city w/ more phamplets on things to do than you have ever seen. There are staff on site for bookings, info, etc. Enjoy!

Do not miss the Great Ocean Road, either by renting a car, or by minivan Tour. Also, get the schedule for the Healsville Sanctuary - well worth half a day, though not cheap - but the US $ is strong against the OZ dollar. I also liked the Melbourne Zoo, and the Royal Gardens are worth a leisurely stroll. I just spent a week in Melbourne and can't wait to go back (having been to Australia twice before this). E-mail me if you like and i will give you more info. Debbie

hi,
the other reply was right about the weather it will probably be freezing, however melbourne has fantastic restaurants and bars so you could quite possibly spend your entire trip indoors!
try Donavans in St.Kilda for a lovely time,
try Brunetti's off Lygon st. for a very Italian coffee
try The Spencer Hotel in North Melb for
a fantastic pub steak
try afternoon tea at the Windsor in the city for a Victorian high tea.
Don't forget to go to the footy at the MCG , a very Melbounian experience,
Definately healsville and either yarra valley or Mornington Peninsula for the wines, make sure u dont drive
try the half-tix booth in the city walk
for show tickets, maybe there will be some comedy?
or try the noticeboards at Readings bookshops in Lygon St for more alternative venues
have fun
