5 extra days in November - where to go?
 

We have been planning a trip to Australia starting mid November. Originally had 18 days beginning in Melbourne, GOR, Kangaroo Island, Flinders Ranges and ending with 5 days in Sydney. We just learned we may be able to add 5 extra days on the front of the trip. Where would you go and what would you do in mid November for 5 days? Tasmania? Queensland? Kakadu?

Gold Coast

How about extending your time in South Australia and visiting the Barossa, the Clare Valley and wandering your way back to Melbourne via the Murray River region. Lots of wineries,and a pleasant area to visit. Echuca in particular is a very nice old town with a riverboat port and lots of riverboats. You could then drive back into Melbourne via Bendigo - another nice town with lots of history.

You obviously don't mind the hot weather as southern Australia is really warming up at that time of year.

The 'Build Up Season' in the top end can be really spectacular but hot and humid. If the rains have not started there will be wonderful electrical storms and the wildlife will all be concentraated around the water holes.

On the Great Barrier Reef the coral will be spawning and October/November is becoming THE time for birdwatchers to be in north Queensland. The Atherton Tablelands is the area for wildlife and lovely crater lakes. The waterfalls will not be spectacular as it is the end of the dry season.

Tasmania is beautiful at any time of the year. The alpine flowers will not be out but it is not yet likely to get those hot continental winds which take the Tasmanian highs for the year well over those experienced where I live in north Queensland.

I'm finding that too, Alan, dedicated birdwatchers who used to come to FNQ in September have switched to November for the last few years.
