1 Week in Cook Islands: Raratonga or Aitutaki?
 

I will be going to the Cook Islands in early November for a week, but I'm not sure if I should pick one island to explore or split my time between the two. I am in my late 20s and will be traveling alone. Relaxation on a beautiful beach is at the top of my list, but I also enjoy great restaurants (although I'll be eating alone). All recommendations are appreciated. Thank you in advance.

A week on Aitutaki by yourself may be a "bit" too quiet. Though it is a truly beautiful place. IMHO I Would suggest a mix between the two.

Spend about 4 days on Raro exploring the coast and up into the hills in the centre of the Island. Then maybe 2 - 3 days on Aitutaki. Very relaxing spot. Make sure you take a trip out on the lagoon to the far side around One Foot Island.

There are more eatery options on Raro. It is more limited on Aitutaki, but then with a population of only around 1,400 what more can you expect?

Wait for a response from Lord Balfor. HE has some great advice about the Cooks.

BTW, if you are staying on Raro, stay on the south coast or around Muri lagoon. The beaches are much better here and the lagoon more swimable.

I agree with Kiwi_acct and would split my time. Both are beautiful places (with slightly different strengths and weaknesses). Aitutaki will feel more remote and isolated - and with a more more beautiful and exotic lagoon. Rarotonga has a more beautiful interior and a great choice of restaurants and things to do/see. They are similar in that both are "tropical paradise" type islands, but there are also pretty different and both should be seen.

I have to agree with the others about splitting your time. I stayed at the Pacific Resort on Raro and made a day trip to Aitutaki. I did not have the time for an overnight visit but was at least able to have a look at this lovely quiet remote island! Two nights on Aitutaki would be just fine, I think. It's a good place to chill.
