1 day in Wellington New Zealand
We will be in Wellington for only one day. Can you help with an itinerary for that day?
|
This was our one day in Wellington. Took the tram to the top of the botanical gardens, slowly wandered down the hill to the rose garden and the café. Coffee in the sunshine. Wandered our way to Te Papa (Wellington's excellent museum), lunch in the café, spent time looking at exhibits, especially the Maori section. Walked back along the waterfront into the city and a brief look at the shops.

Sounds like a wonderful day. I love Wellington's botanic gardens.
|
Of course, it depends on what you enjoy. If you go to the botanic gardens be sure to see the peace flame (from Hiroshima). Also, wander and browse Cuba Street.
|
sadly it was raining on what we thought was going to be our half day in Wellington, so we went to Te Papa and the craft market near the waterfront and then had an early lunch before going to board our boat to Picton.
there we were told that our sailing was delayed by 3 hours, so we went back into town and went round the Museum of Wellington City and Sea, which was extremely interesting, though I could have done without the exhibit on the ferry disaster, given that the ferry we were due to catch had been affected by the bad weather. I'd have loved to see the Botanical gardens, but in fact we did see quite a few others - in Christchurch, Oamaru, and Timaru - so i can't complain. What did we miss in Cuba street, Songdoc? |
annhig: sorry you got rain--but it still sounds like a nice day.
To me, Cuba Street is the heart of Wellington. It's a pedestrian mall lined with funky, interesting shops, a neat water sculpture, galleries, nightclubs and restaurants. Lots of street performers, beautiful old buildings, and great people watching. The Friday night market has every ethnic food imaginable--and they all look and smell great! Hopefully, you'll get there next time. |
songdoc - we enjoyed the museums and the craft market but the best bit was the ferry crossing to Picton. By the time the ferry left the waves had subsided, the wind abated, and the views were terrific.
