yangshou hotel choice?

Based on the recommendations, we plan to stay in Yangshou. Recent reports say the Paradise Hotel is overpriced and run down. I see wonderful reports on the Magnolia Hotel. Is this hotel in a good location? Is it easy to get to the main part of Yanshou from Magnolia. I think we will go to Xing Ping to take the shorter boat from there. thanks

Just back from Yangshuo and the Magnolia Hotel. We stayed in a deluxe king bedded room- large bath and large room with comfy bed. The service was great at the hotel-- Jasmine and Ly Ly speak English really well and are vbery welcoming and helpful if you need to make land or boat arrangements. The hotel is right in the midst of anything you want to do inYangshuo-- the only drawback might be the music from the neighboring bars in the evening-- At firest I thought it would bother me ( I am past the age of late night bar hopping), but it did not and it stops about 11 or midnight. I highly recommend the hotel and staff- make sure you have them arrnange for a lunch in Luigong village- good food in a magnificent setting in an old fishing village!

Thanks I'll try to contact Magnolia Hotel
did you do the evening fishing with Cormorants? if so how was it arranged.

We did not do the evening fishing trip but I cannot imagine that it cannot be arranged by the hotel or the myriad travel agents in town.

You might also want to try the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat. It's a little off the beaten track but with spectacular scenery and some of the best staff and food of any place we've stayed in China. Make sure to book in advance. They have a decent website you can check. This place is great if you want to get away from the craziness of West Street.
Have fun!

yes thank you I am trying to get in touch with the Yangshuo mountain retreat. It does sound lovely. I have emailed them and asked how would we get back to West street from their resort? I guess I'll try to call them tonight.

I am having trouble contacting the Yangshuo mountain retreat. They don't respond to my email and when I try their number it doesn't come through. I dial the country code 011 then the eleven diget number. Is this correct? thanks

Any comments on the Overnight Morning Sun Hotel? I have heard that there is noisy street activities(that's to be expected, right?) and friendly staff. Anything else to be wary of or to enjoy?

I've never stayed at the Magnolia, but have had friends that raved about it.

I stayed at the Morning Sun Hotel last September and it was marvelous. Much less expensive than the Magnolia. The staff is wonderful. No breakfast is included but there are restaurants literally next door and down the street.

As for noise, it's on a side street so you don't get the loud bar bands and revelry at night. I had to move to another hotel on the main drag (West St./Foreigner's St.) because of the October national holidays, and it was a much smaller room for a lot more money and really LOUD!

Laundry service is extremely cheap at the Morning Sun and you can watch them hang your clothes to dry on the top level of the center atrium. Don't expect perfection, but it'll get you through with clean, if not perfectly pressed, clothing.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Ask for a room with a balcony over a little river. It was nice to sit out in the early mornings and evenings when it wasn't too hot.

I checked around town for prices on the evening performance of Sanjie Liu and the Morning Sun had a much better price plus a van for an extra Y20. I also booked cooking lessons through them and I'm sure other things had I wanted to. They have a computer that you can use free for e-mail when it's available. I had also gotten a foot massage at a nearby large establishment that was mediocre. When the staff learned where I had gone, they literally took me to a small nearby place that was the same price but excellent. The proprietoress, Frances, is wonderful.

Also please note it's YangshUO, not Yangshou. Wish I were back there now!

K.
