Yangon Hotels

Hi - we just asked SM to book hotels and flights for our trip to Yangon/Bagan/Inle Lake for next February (just after Chinese New Year). We are following many of the suggestions that have been presented in this forum - thanks!

We had asked for the Summit Parkview in Yangon - however, they came back to us suggesting the Park Royal.

Is it likely that the Summit Parkview is already booked up for next Feb? (Its website is not very informative.)

The TA reviews for the Park Royal are all over the map - any comments on it?

SM booked us at the Park Royal on arrival and the Summit Parkview on the way out. I can't comment on what's immediately around the hotels, as we were busy and not in the room until late. However, as to the hotels themselves, the Park Royal was a large business type of hotel. Our room was quite big compared with the Parkview, but not all that new. The breakfast buffet was large and had lots of choices. We had to leave very early for a flight and they had coffee and croissants out in the lobby for those people with early flights. In addition, they sent us off with a breakfast box. All in all, it was fine but nothing special.

The good point about the Summit Parkview was the view of the top of Shwedagon Pagoda from the room, all lit up at night. And of course, the proximity of the Pagoda means it is probably easier to visit at night from that hotel. Our room however, reminded us of a Motel 6 a bit, as it was pretty small and a bit worn. It looked like it had a nice breakfast buffet, but we were leaving too early for that. They did give us a breakfast box, but it had yesterday's pastries in it and wasn't great.

Both were fine, but if you have the budget for the Strand or the Governor's residence, fodorites have seemed to like them quite a bit. Have a great trip, SM did a really nice job for us.

You might also look at the Savoy as an option. Not nearly as expensive as the Strand or the Governor's Residence, it's a good option.

Also, if you really want the Summit Parkview, ask them to put you on the waitlist.
