xmas bangkok hotel

our planning is going well for next december trip with family of 4- but we are stuck on bangkok hotel. we had wanted riverside, esp marriott with all the advice I have read here. but, the prices are too high for us as we need 2 rooms. with tax, each room is about $300, and as I need 2 rooms, that is too rich for us. the discount sights have no prices yet. I would like about $150-$200 per room per night incl tax. what are your suggestions? good location, nice hotel, but sadly it won't be one of bangkok's "best" on this trip at peak season!
thanks

here are two choices....the marriott mayfair serviced apartment....very very nice and centrally located.....the brand new marriott courtyard in the same area....the majestic grande on soi 2 sukhumvit, any of the centre point properties, the silom one being almost on the river and next to the shangri-la and skytrain.....

in the serviced apartment you can get two bedrooms and living space...

Check out Fraser Place.

First off, I am seeing prices on Marriott’s own website for Christmas week of US$185 or so per room (Baht 5800), not US$300 per room. Where are you getting your prices? Go to Marriott.com, I picked Dec 22-30 as the dates as I figured they would be the most expensive that week. This is just the standard room, no river view, but IMO would be fine. River view rooms seem to be running like US$200 per night.

Secondly, you might want to ask about the suites at the Marriott Bangkok. These are running about US$400 per night, but you would only need 1 room. You could all fit easily into their large suites, kids on rollaway in the living room, or even one on the sofa there. (Ask about maximum number of people in the room and any rollaway charges; note that there is only one full bath, which may be an issue with teenagers.) These generally have good views.

IMO you will appreciate the nice big Marriott pool in December with a family, plus the convenience of being on the river, so I would not give up on that hotel yet. The Marriott Courtyard is a good choice too, the serviced apartment is a nice idea for the family as it will have a small kitchen, but IMO being on the river is so much better. I like the Mayfair a lot, but the pool is quite small, is completely covered by a roof top (not necessarily a bad thing in the Bangkok sun but teenagers may be disappointed with the total shade) and is on the top floor of the hotel, so it’s not green, although it has some interesting views. I have not seen the Courtyard nor its pool, so can’t comment, I do hear nice things about the hotel itself, from the pictures the pool looks like it gets some sun and is in a bit more of a green, planted area.

People who are more knowledgeable than me may have advice for how to book the Marriott via priceline, etc. where you may get a better deal (although I would then go to Marriott and ask them to match it). You of course want to make sure that you get the Marriott Bangkok if that is your first choice, which I don’t know how to do on price line, but I think others may be able to point you as to how to bid.

Another serviced apartment idea would be the Somerset Suwan Park View. Apartments are of a very generous size, and you could possibly get two bedrooms, if they have not already filled up.

Location is a 7 minute walk to the skytrain station at either Ploenchit or Nana. Easy walk to shopping!!

Adelphi Suites is great, but the size is quite a bit smaller than Somerset, but the location is quite a bit better...

IMO the most "festive" hotels for the Xmas - New Year period would be on Rajdamri Avenue, or in another word - the Grand Hyatt and the Four Seasons(perhaps the Inter Continental too). The road will be brightly lit with Xmas decorations and it does give a special Xmas feeling staying around there. For the new year I would opt for the river and watch the fire works from your room.

i think 4bams meant that 2 rooms would be $400...

all good ideas raised here....

to save some money use the discounted sites:

We stayed at the Centre Point Silom at Christmas. It was a lovely place to stay and they ahve a big party at Christmas. It's right near the river.

Get a serviced apartment. I've been vacationing in BKK for a decade now and some years ago decided to get out of the hotel system and get into the serviced apartment system after the law changed and rentals were available for less than a month's stay. I vacation there twice a year...for one week...and for three weeks... But, now buildings will rent for even one day. The thought of going back to a hotel is scary to me.
Go on moveandstay.com for a list with photos and then select one that you're interested in and then contact the building. I've only used moveandstay.com to look at the list. I've personally found rates cheaper dealing directly with the building.
Bangkok has so many great serviced apartment buildings that one should take advantage of them and not go through the hassle and expense of booking two rooms at a hotel. My building is emporiumsuites.com. There are buildings all over the city and in every price range however. Happy Travels!

Not sure how long you are staying in Thailand, but be aware that some holtels have MANDITORY dinners for NY eve. These are very expensive. I don't think the same applies for xmas, but do check.

Guenmai Apr 14th, 2008 09:37 AM

If you make a list of serviced apartment buildings that you might be interested in if you decide to go that way, then post the list and we can give feedback. I've seen lots of them over the many years. Simpson510 and I have been repeatedly staying at them and checking various ones out for quite some years now.Happy Travels!

Also I do know that Centre Point Silom did NOT have a manditory New Years'Eve dinner...and we were able to go up on the roof and watch the fireworks on the river...very cool! You can see the pictures here:
www.rovinghutters.myphotoalbum.com

They also allowed us to keep luggage there while we were gone for three days to Chiang Mai. They were very helpful. I also liked the grocery store in the bottom floor of the building- we were able to buy snacks and water and such.

cicerone, don't know how you found prices of 5800 baht. on marriott.com, and also by calling the marriott 1-800 number and by calling the hotel directly, the nightly rate is 7500 baht for dec 30 and 31st. with tax it is 8800 baht which is $293 candian (almost the same as U.S.) with breakfast it is 9485 baht, which is $316. this is where I get approx $300 per room per night (actually it is $250 per room pre tax and breakfast) no deals on any of the internet sites either. perhaps you were looking at a different marriott, not the resort and spa riverside?
I would like to pay under $200 per room including taxes . I will look at some of the suggestions above, and while apartments sound great, we would like a pool and some facilities for those couple of days if possible. any more suggestions are welcome!

bisbee- is fraser place well located? I actually have stayed at one of their london properties and loved it!

Scotters Apr 14th, 2008 03:28 PM

Cicerone was correct for the merriott if you book over Christmas but for the period from dec27-jan1 it goes way up.

Fraser is in a fair location but nowhere near the great location of the centre point silom. Also its 2 bedroom at 183sqm (huge) is double the fraser 2BR. As for facilities both have all you would get in a hotel except for maybe restaurants and drinks by the pool.

rhkkmk Apr 14th, 2008 05:47 PM

almost all of the apartment complexes have pools, but not huge ones like the marriott riverside...

did you try the discount sites....the marriott.com site is the most expensive place to look...it does not help to contact them either...

i am paying between $154 and 175 for my stays starting in two weeks...all in.....but that is low season...

rhkkmk Apr 14th, 2008 05:53 PM

i just looked on asia rooms...from early dec to the 25 its $198 all in for a room for 2 and $221 christmas week

Bisbee Apr 15th, 2008 02:03 AM

Fraser Place isn't in a bad location, but it is a great property. There are other places closer to BTS access, but with the Fraser (since you have stayed there) you know what you're getting.

Cicerone Apr 15th, 2008 03:12 AM

Well, now that I see your dates, I can explain why you are getting different rates. I picked December 22-30 when choosing dates. It is Baht 5800 until December 27, and as noted above, they go up by about 1700 Baht from the 27th -30th. (As I did not know when your trip was, I assumed when you said it was “xmas” that you would be there for Christmas day itself and the period leading up to it.)

Other posters seem to have success in getting discounted rates there, so you might try that.
