We will be touring Asia for four weeks (Oct.-Nov. and will be going to Xian from Hong Kong for two days. We want a driver who will speak English to take us to the standard attractions as well as a visit to the Potters of Chen Lu which I understand is about an hour and a half north of Xian. Any suggestions for guide or other things we shouldn't miss would be so helpful. Love all the hints on Bangkok since we will be spending a week there.

Your hotel should be able to arrange an English speaking driver for you. This was a few years ago, but cost was around 500 RMB, about twice the going rate for a taxi but you won't find English speaking taxi drivers. Try one of the many dumpling banquets for dinner. De Fa Chang is one of the well known restaurants for these banquets. On your second night if you like lamb, try the local mutton and bread stew called 'pao mo'.
