Word of mouth
http://ww2.13abc.com/Global/story.asp?S=6691478
I'm published! It was by sheer coincidence that I came across the above. Did Katie H post it in June? Feels as though I now belong to some exclusive club! I changed computers recently and stated posting under a pseudonym. May revert back. |
BTW, complimentary guides are now offered to those published.
|
Wow - thanks for the info, Cilla! I hadn't realized I was on the list - now I'll have to think about which guide I want!! Nice of them to offer ANY guide. (And I need to find out what the quote was.)
|
That's cool!
Where do you find this info for other issues or for 2006 guides for other countries/states? |
Yeah, I'm wondering what I said that they thought was quotable! I'll have to think about which guide I'd like.
|
Hey I am in there too. No idea what I said! How do you get your guide?

OK I read the article properly and have figured out the answer to getting the guide!! (so amused to see my name I didn't read properly the first time!)

I stopped by Barnes & Noble to have a look at the new guides. The Japan guide just has "Word of Mouth" quotes at the beginning of the sections, but China has more scattered through the text, so more people are included. Kathie - your quote was about teapots.
I looked through the China guide and really liked the color photos in the front, and the "extras" on things like tea and Chinese opera. It seems to be a very comprehensive guide if you're headed for the main tourist sights - Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, especially, but also Chengdu and Lijiang. But, it's not a comprehensive guide to China. Datong, for instance, that rates two pages in the "Fodor's Exploring Guide" is missing altogether, as are places like Wuxi and Lushan and Putuoshan. The sections on Tibet and Xishuangbanna seemed thin, too. |
Thanks, Thursdays!

Uh-oh. I hope they didn't quote something really stupid I've said here. ;)
Need to hit the bookstore this weekend. |
rkkwan - lots of quotes (no silly ones, really!) from you and Neil_Oz and a couple of other people. Figure you deserve two books!
|
I glanced through the China (5th Edition) at Borders today. Okay, the 3-4 quotes from me weren't totally stupid, which I am glad.
I did find quite a few mis-information or typos in the practical information section. At least in the Hong Kong/Macau section. They should have sent me a copy of that section to proof-read. I am serious. |
BTW, the most memorable "Word of Mouth" quote in the China book is Marija's about Yichang. It was nasty, but true! ;)

Hello! I've been out of town but I just saw this.
Fodor's only put out two Gold guides in June (Gold guides feature the Word of Mouth user quotes); we'd like to properly thank users quoted in the guides in the upcoming publishing year (starting with our first '08 books to hit store shelves this fall). I did place the announcement as a way to gauge interest in receiving the guides; we took the announcement down after some weeks and I've been working with others here on a plan to fully thank contributors this fall. We will of course honor the offer. I've been out of town for the past few days--imagine my surprise to see so much interest in my mail box. Can't complain though--I'm glad that you are curious about the books and happy to be included. I'll tackle the project of getting you those books tomorrow; the system for sending out those books is not in place yet---but the intent behind it is. We really do appreciate your suggestions here. We're excited to hear your feedback so that we may improve future editions. Thanks for your patience and happy Tuesday! |
I'd forgotten about this again, so what a nice surprise when a Gold Guide to Austria showed up on the doorstep (right in the middle of checking airfares). Thanks so much, fodors!
