Wonderful food experiences in Japan
 

Hi there,

I will be travelling and living in Japan for six months, and would love to know your favourite eatery that you found in Japan.

One of the best food experiences was in Kyoto. My wife and I just walked around and we came across a sushi place. There was a line of locals waiting to get in so we just lined up to get an authentic experience :d We sat around the "conveyer belt" and just picked the different plates that we wanted and watched the 2 sushi chefs in action. It was a fun experience but I'm not too crazy about sushi...so the food was not great but it is an experience that I won't forget :-)

I have two favorites
1) Okinamiyaki - Hiroshima style. We had it in Saijo at a place called Qu. It was about 850 yen for a single and 1500 for a double. I couldn't finish my single and I was starving.
I knew I had been in Japan a while (about 12 days) when I realized I was eating what was basically an omlet (structure wise, not taste wise) with chopsticks.
2) Japanese style bbq at a host family's house. It probably cost them quite a bit, but they wouldn't let us pay for anything!

Moss Burger for fast food

Japanese-style cheesecake

Sushizanmai in Tsukiji.

with a side order of gyoza

Oh tudor, we thought Mos Burger was horrible. First Kitchen was MUCH better for that need for high calorie and cholesterol food (plus tastier too!!).

yes! ramen, in Takayama.

that 295y ramen was an excellent prelude to a great kaiten sushi lunch at maguro hito in asakusa. going back again in jyu gatsu.:-))

Yakitori at Yakitori alley near Yurakucho JR station.

We stopped at Kawayo Green Youth Hostel (Mukaiyama, Aomori-ken) last Nov, and the food was AWESOME. They are on a farm, and everything was fresh- it was the best breakfast I've ever eaten. It is out of the way, but well worth the experience. Its about 4400 yen to spend the night and have breakfast and supper- they also have a restaraunt if you just want to eat. http://www.jyh.or.jp/english/

In Tokyo, Ginza area: Go to the basement of the Mitsukoshi Department Store. It has the most incredible assortment of take-out foods you will ever see anywhere. Many department stores in Japan have food departments, but I think Mitsukoshi's is the largest. The bento boxes there are works of art. I've never seen food arranged so artistically.

The Yakitori places under the train tracks between Tokyo station and Yurakucho station are great!
It is of interest that I am a "foodie" who has eaten in many high end restaurants around the world, yet in Japan I like very simple restaurants that serve foods like ramen,soba, yakitori and sushi. Do not have any specific places to recommend other than to say that it is very difficult to get such Japanese foods outside Japan in decent quality so you might as well enjoy it while you are visiting.
