wine in Bangkok
Reading through the forums it seems as though the wine in Bkk is expensive, do you think it would be a problem to fetch a box in from the UK [not too keen on beer]. Thanks
|
Forget wine in Bangkok. It is very expensive, the selection is limited, and it is not of first quality. (I should add, however, that I have not had much experience at fancy establishments.) At nice airconditioned restaurants, I'm sure that it adds to the pleasure of the meal, but, at outdoor restaurants, even at the Oriental Hotel along the water, it is not very enjoyable because of the heat. Wine in Bangkok is very expensive. In nice, air-conditioned restaurants, expect to pay big bucks for mediocre wines. I sometimes bring a special bottle or two with me for a special dinner (check with the restaurant to see if they have a corkage charge). I don't know what the limit is on bringing wine into Thailand, but many countries limit you to one bottle (up to one liter) per person.

Many Bkk restauarnts charge u reasonable corkage and it is well worth it to drink what u like. Duty free allowance into Bkk is 2 bottles of wine or 1 bottle of stronger spirits eg whisky, vodka, etc.

wine was never a very big item in thailand until recently when the controls of the enviornment became easier (keeping bottles from getting too hot)....i think restaurants have discoved that people want wine and that there is a big mark-up....personally we only order single glasses and only occasionally ($4-8)....we prefer the beer and bottled freezing cold water....

are you serioius.. your considering luging a box of wine on your trip.. if thats the case why not go too BIG C, tesco lotus or other big retailer in bangkok and say give me your most expenseve wine.. maybe it will be drinkable.. if you so happen too go too cambodia do pick up your liquer there..
|
kathie; i am impressed, "a special bottle or TWO". do you consume these wines by yourself?
orgy7, the big c is a good idea. i think i will do that next time. |
Heavens, no, kuranosuke! One bottle to share over a long meal is my limit!
I was thinking about my recent trip to Lombok. We bought a bottle of Champagne in Changi to have with a special dinner at our villa, knowing that there wouldn't be much wine selection on Lombok. |
speeking of buying liquer a new law was just put into afect 3 weeks ago.. YOu can only buy liquer from 11AM-2pm and 5pm-12am...
I noticed this law at the big reatail stores but don't know whats the story with resteraunts and 7-11's actually I would imagin the convinient stores are actually the main target since children regulary by liquere there. |
orgy---bkk thinking...just change the time on your watch and you can buy it anytime---just look at your watch????

but your right there are always places too buy anything at anytime. |
