Why no kid friendliness in Maldives? Why phones are not answered?

Hello,

I recently started searching for accomodation in Maldives and only encountered frustration. I will be traveling with my wife and 2 kids (both are under 10 years of age). I have spent a lot of time looking through resorts that advertised themselves as kids friendly and suited our budgets. After I would select one and try to make reservation, I would get the annoying message that NONE of the roomtype would accomodate two kids. Why advertise as kids friendly and then not allow them in the room? Even in Europe, where the room size are typically smaller than what you have in the US, I did not have issue finding a hotel room that would accomodate a family with two children.

I mentioned this to some of my friends who have been to Maldives and they pointed out the children are discouraged in Maldives. We have terms such as racism and sexism. Perhaps we need one for discriminating children.

I tried calling three resorts to get clarification and NONE of them picked up the phones. I have tried LUX, Kuramathi and Filitheyo. Note that this would be my first trip to Maldives and perhaps this is just my inexperience.

By now, however, I have pretty much given up and would perhaps choose a destination where I can vacation with my family.

Have you tried Bandos? They offer extra beds and cribs, have a Kids Club and even offer Junior Spa services for kids between 4-11.

To be fair I think the designs of most of the resorts in the Maldives are not suitable for children. This is especially true for those parents who are contemplating of thinking of letting their children stay in their own rooms or bungalow without an adult. Most of the better resorts will have over water bungalows which are probably very dangerous for children to run around by themselves.

The real reason is probably because the resorts will not be able to sell alcohol at exuberant prices to children!

Thanks Bruce. I am calling from USA. I dialed 011-960-xxx-xxxx. I heard the bell ringing but call was not answered. The fact that this happened at all three places I called makes me suspect if I made some error?

I tried expedia and its booking system did allow me to specify 2 children for LUX. My first two choices however were Kuramathi and Filitheyo. Perhaps LUX is better or as good? you may be right that the first two might allow 2 children in a room if I talked to them (if I can get to them via phone )

Another choice is Hilton Irun Fushi which also accomodates children.

In summary, I am down to LUX, Hilton, Filitheyo and Kuramathi. Besides being able to accomodate children, quality of the beaches/clarity of the water would be deciding factor among these four. I did rule out resorts closer to Male such as Kurumba even though transportation cost was less. Other resorts were beyond budget or too small (few activities)

Thanks for all the feedback!

Bruce, you were right that booking system does allow me make reservation at Filietheyo and Kuramathi if I specify 1 child only. Perhaps I could plead with them to let the second child stay in the room too.

qzseattle -

Are you taking the time difference into consideration when you call? Perhaps you're calling after reception has closed?

There are around 100 resorts islands in the Maldives. All beaches are crystal clear while sandy beaches. I guess they are very child friendly. How about trying this combination when calling to Maldives: +960 +number (local numbers has 7 digits).
