I travel to Asia on a regular basis and have an observation: The beds are too hard. I am not talking about a firm mattress but a rock hard one. I know many people who prefer a firm mattress but the beds at the various places I have stayed at in a number of Asian Countries are not firm they are just plain HARD. Hard as sleeping on a concrete floor.

What is it with hard mattresses and traveling in Asia? I am talking about high end hotels and in many cases Western Hotel chains. What gives?

I can speak only for India.

There is a long, deeply rooted belief that sleeping on anything soft will deform and curve the spine and cause problems with the spine later in life. I have many family members that won't even use a pillow because they think that is bad for the posture as well.

They don't understand how western matresses work with the coils, springs, and support, etc. and that the spine actually does better on a moderately firm matress with proper support of the different parts of the body.

Sealy and Posturepedic have their work cut out for them if they try to go into the Indian market!!!

Mattresses in many Asian hotels are hard, but those in international chains and places that cater to Westerners do have the sorts of softer mattresses we are accustomed to.

I've been traveling in Asia for a lot of years and I can't say I've run across a hard mattress in a Western chain hotel - Ritz-Carleton, Hyatt, Four Seasons, Sheraton, or the Asian chains like Shangri-La or Peninsula.

Sigh - another nonsensical 'discussion post' from the OP with the usual 'discussion starting' furpheys and idiot sweeping statements designed to drag in the unwary - so we can 'discuss'.

What I should have replied with is: However miserable the matresses are, it hasn't done anything to deter activities that have resulted in a billion plus population has it?

I love hard beds. I just bought one to rival Asian beds. Hard as a rock. I'm sleeping great.

This would have been the Dogster version: It was a little like a rectangle and hard, not really not soft, but fairly hard and he wondered how many others had already mounted its hard and seemingly flat surface which reminded him of the tacky woman who seemed not to notice that he was there when after all a short attendant in India seemed to suggest something about his penis which she apparently had no interest in altho he would not have worn Orange for dinner although as the brown water passed by as ever and the sky turned to a shape like the thing others had mounted and he wondered how many but it did seem hard, and he wondered what others would say about it in the bar that evening as he made them mad with desire speaking about some new louche hotel in Bangkok he just discovered which also had one of these same kind of hard rectangular things with sheets on it.

WT1024 - while I am not the Forum policeman, generally the purpose here is to post helpful information rather than to post topics with the intent to stir up discussion. The Lounge is the preferred venue for that.

Asian beds usually lack a box spring. This is fine with me and Mr. Pearl as we hate smushy beds. The beds we slept on in HK were terrifically hard (thin mattress on a poured concrete platform, same as in Costa Rica) but we found the beds in India to be quite wonderful -- sort of a charpoy (woven ropes) with a padded mattress on top.
