which sounds best in Malaysia?
We have about a week free in our trip to Malaysia..
We could go to Taman Negara, or we could drive from KL to Khota Bharu taking 6 days to do the drive.. (50 miles per day)
Yes, very different type of things, but looking for input from people that have done one or both.

What time of year? Also, I think the coasts are more interesting than going overland. 50 miles is quite a slow pace as well, you could do the overland bit more quickly and spend more time in the coastal areas, but time of year would make a very big difference due to the rainfall patterns. Take a look at weatherbase.com. Esp in the park, not sure it would be all that much fun in the heavy heavy rainfall months in the late fall and winter (but then neither would the cost around K Bharu).

The bus ride from Penang to Khota Bharu only took about 3-4 hours, with a food and bathroom break. FYI, Khota Bharu is the most conservative Muslim state in Malaysia. While the people were friendly, and the beach OK, I did not even take my swimming suit off (one piece; I was 51) because all the local women were totally covered. If you want beauty and beaches, Langkawi was stunning and much less conservative. Taman Negara is also very scenic.

We plan to take about 9 days to do KL to Kuala Besut, but expect to spend a few of these days in parks like TNegare and check out Cameron.
All tips are very welcome for things along the way worth a day or two.
