which is your favourite Penang restaurant/ stall?

Come on all you fodorites, where would you recommend? I'm going there very shortly and would welcome your suggestions!

Try the Net- doesn't look like much but the food is wonderful! You will find it opposite the Ship. At the opposite end of the resort try the Boatman -especially the fish.

I agree, the Boatman in Batu Ferringhi is excellent. On the Main Road past Holiday Inn. Local Food costs between $4RM to $25RM. Hard to find just ask the locals. Many of the stalls in Georgetown are very cheap eg $2.20RM for a bowl of Kuay Teow Soup (Noodles inSoup with Fish balls/Meat etc.
Bring your own Wine/Alcohol as imported stuff is expensive, local alcohol is disguisting, believe me I've tried it it tastes like Meths.

Go to this place called Gurney Drive for local stalls. It's quite close to Batu Ferringhi. Its very popular among the locals. Do check with the locals when you are there. have a fun time!

I'm a Penangite. The best overall hawker food that can be found in one place is at the centre coffee shop at Lorong Selamat off Burmah Rd. A lot of indv best stalls around the island but you'll hv to e-mail me for the list.

As for r'rants, go to 32 northam Rd for good western food in wonderful surroundings and 68 Kelawei Rd for the best crab laksa in penang. For nonya food go to Hot Wok at Gurney Plaza shopping centre.

Where are you from?

I would prefer to recommend HOT WOK cause of its Peranakan Culture and Theme Restaurant.Cause so far I've been a member of Penang Heritage.Hot Wok did a great jobh in Preserving Penang food and culture. The new outlet at Tanjung Tokong look promising.but the outlet in Gurney Plaza closed is not a good idea to set up a theme restaurant.

I would say the Hot Wok in Tanjung Tokong looks more peranakan than the one in Gurney Plaza. As for the food tastes much better over at the new place with cheaper price compare to the Gurney. Hope it will last its customs for many decades to come.

There's an Indian place in Georgetown called something like Anand Sri Begawan. It's on a popular corner in Little India. My goodness, I've never eaten so much food that was so incredibly delicious for so cheap. We walked in, clearly looking like tourists, and were escorted by who I think was an owner to a table. He asked what we liked, and after deciding on one main course - three or four servers plopped down a dozen different sides. They had to roll us out of there, we ate so much - and for two, the bill came to under $5 US!

If only they delivered...

It's been a couple of years since I've been in Georgetown but I always loved getting stuck into the Indian food there. In my opinion the Kashmir (located in the basement of the Oriental Hotel) has magnificient food. Also very good is Dawood (in Queen St) from memory their Curry Kapitan is renowned. And for cheap fast Indian Yasmeen (in Penang Road) is also excellent. Also I know some years ago the E&O Hotel did a Sunday curry tiffin, which I never tried but friends raved about. I don't know if they still offer this or not.

I just ran accross a card for Pintail, on Penang Road just down from the E&O hotel. It's been a few years since I was there last, but I still remember this place for the best meal I had in Penang.

Agree with Fiona & Julian on their comments on Boatman Restaurant which located at Batu Ferringhi Road. Boatman serve nice good food from local to western. If u happen to be at Batu Ferringhi, don't forget to drop by! *recommending the Tomyam and Banana Fritters.. yummy...
