Which HK hotel would you recommend?
 

We are trying to plan a trip to Hong Kong and would like to stay in the Causeway Bay area of Hong Kong island.<BR>Of the following hotels, which one have you stayed at, and would you recommend it?<BR>1. Park Lane <BR>2. Excelsior<BR>3. Metro Park Hotel<BR>4. Regal Hong Kong Hotel<BR><BR>Are there any others in the proximity that you would suggest? We are also on a budget, but want to be comfortable and convenient to MTR, etc.<BR><BR>Thank you!

Sue<BR><BR>I've stayed at Regal and Park Lane and liked the Park Lane a bit more but both are OK. If you are on a budget then among these 2 the cheaper would be fine. Sorry but I cannot help with the other 2.<BR><BR>YMCA in TST often has some good rates and is quite a nice place but not on HK Island (and not what you would typically expect of a YMCA). You can search this site and perhaps find other postings about the Y.

Personally, I don't any of your choices. Actually I just don't like to stay in Causeway Bay - unless you have to. Hong Kong island has more expensive hotels but not necessarily nicer. Kowloon is a much better choice for budge travellers. Strongly recommend YMCA Salisbury in TST. It is close to MTR, star ferry, water front, shops, restaurants, ...

Park Lane and Excelsior are both in very central locations and you will be able to get to a MTR station in 3 minutes. The Regal is nice too but a little out of the way. Don't bother with Metro Park unless you want to stay with large tours of China tourists. The restaurants at the Park Lane and Excelsior are also good.

Don't even bother to consider staying at the Regal Hong Kong for Metro Park. Bad location and management. Between Park Lane and the Excelsior, I would pick Park Lane. Though Excelsior's location is a tiny bit better, Park Lane is quieter and classier. In any case, both are very good hotels.

Has anyone stayed at this hotel? <BR><BR>Is it in an unsafe/undesirable area? Their rates are pretty good compared to the others so I would be willing to share the hotel with large tour groups from China...<BR><BR>Any more feedback would be great!

sue, it's not that metropark is in a dodgy location. it's in a more residential area and therefore not as convenient to shops and restaurants as park lane or excelsior.<BR><BR>nothing against tour groups from china (they help the local economy). but they can be VERY noisy (they like to stay on the same floor, open the doors to their rooms and walk back and forth across the hall talking loudly. rather disconcerting.).<BR><BR>i tend to agree with the previous posters -- go for excelsior or park lane.

But they are so much more expensive since we will be staying at the hotel for at least 2 weeks(We will be in HK for 3 weeks - plan to join a short tour to China from HK while we are there). <BR><BR>So does that mean that Metro Park is not within walking distance to the shopping area. Does anyone know approx. how long it would take to walk to the Causeway Bay shopping area from Metro Park? Is it do-able?<BR>I can tell from the maps that Park Lane and Excelsior are definitely close to that area.<BR>Sorry for all the questions!

sue, there are very few places on hk island that are 'inconvenient' per se. u can probably walk from metropark to the shopping areas of cwb in 15-20 minutes -- a nice walk in the autumn when temperatures are cooler, but rather hot right now! tin hau mtr station is roughly a 5 minute walk from the hotel.<BR><BR>if you're looking at cwb, u might also want to consider the rosedale hotel. some friends recently stayed there for around hk$3000 a week. smallish rooms, but newly opened.

How is the Bishop Lei House? I saw it a few years ago when it opened and it seemed nice. Is it still a hotel? Still reasonable cost?

I give another vote to the YMCA Salisbury. Position and price cant be beat.
