Which good Thai restaurant in Bangkok do you suggest?
 

Hello everyone. I am off next week to Laos via Bangkok. I just received an email from some friends of mine who are are travelling around the world and we are both in Bangkok for one day only, and it just happens to be the same day! She is coming from India and I from Canada. We want to meet for dinner somewhere and as I have not been there for five years and really didnt keep notes of where I ate and dont have time to wait until we arrive I was hoping to get some suggestions from Foderites to arrange our meeting point.

I am staying at the Legacy Suites and she is staying not too far away. I know that she is on a budget so was hoping for a good Thai restaurant not too far away that wont break the bank. I dont care if it is five star or fancy, just clean, good Thai food with a bit of atmosphere. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I see that there is one close to Legacy Suites called Maha Naga but it looks fairly expensive. Any comments on that?

I don't recommend Maha Naga. I last ate there maybe 5 years ago. We had one very good meal and a second pretty terrible meal. Also, it calls itself fusion. The first (good) meal we had was more Thai than Fusion, the second (bad) meal was more fusion than Thai. The prices are also pretty high.

The skytrain makes a great many restaurants close by for you. A few faves: Lemongrass on soi 24, a quick walk from the Phrom Prong Skytrain station. I've eaten there almost annually for more than 20 years. Their green Thai curries and their yellow bean Eggplant dish are superb.

Face, a beautiful restaurant in old Thai teak buildings is also excellent. It's a short walk from the Thong Lo skytrain station on soi 29.

I also recommend Ruen Mallika, on Soi 22, but it's a very long trek from the Skytrain and taxis have a hard time finding it.

Sukhumvit soi 8, just a short walk down the soi from Nana BTS staion has one of our faves... Kinaree. We have not eaten there yet this trip, even though we are staying just steps away from it! Must try to get there sometime in the next week.

Debbe - I would second Kinaree, good Thai restaurant, nice atmosphere and reasonable. Looking forward to hearing about Laos...

Live4- learn to differentiate between chinese and real Thai food. Many tourists eat what they think is Thai, but are really just eating chinese or slightly modified Chinese food.

i too suggest kineree and would second faces, although i think it might be more expensive...both are beautiful at night, especially face which is on either soi 38 or 39...

tongue thai and harmonique, both just off new road are economical choices as well with delidious thai food

If you want good low cost thai food you can try Pak Bakery in Soi 23. N i think staying at Legacy Suites u can get a discount with it as well.

I love Chote Chitr, but by no means is it a place with "atmosphere." It has a street food vibe. It's also a long way from where you are staying and is not easy to find. Elizabeth published a set of directions, as did I and it's still hard to find!

Thanks so much everyone. I was all set to go to Kinaree last night but my friends called at the last minute to cancel as they both got food poisioning from a seafood restaurant the night before.
Hopefully this info will help others however.
