Which area to stay in Singapore

Have a dilemma, am trying to find some kind of budget accomodation in Singapore
My research have found 3 areas that have hotels at reasonable rates.

Geylang. Have read that it is a red light district. How unpleasant is it in the evenings?
Am not concerned of being propositioned, though that would be flattering. It is more a question of safety and location.

The other two locations are Little India or Joo Chiat.

As usual grateful for suggestions

I have to say that I can't imagine any place in SIngapore being unsafe! Some places are more or less pleasant than others. Of the areas you list, I might tend toward Little India. By the way, a regular poster here, Guenmai, has often stayed at the YMCA/YWCA which has a great location.

of the three areas you listed, i reco joo chiat. geylang is the red light district, but i don't think the girls would bother you, they will be too busy making the deal, and they are mostly on the back streets.(don't ask me how i know this) :-)

joo chiat is a nice area, lots of great places to eat, close to the marine parade shopping mall, and a easy bus ride into town. of course, taxis are cheap too.

also, as kathie mentioned, do check out the ym/ywca. good location, but don't know the rates.

Joo Chiat is where Eng Seng is. It's a great place to eat Black Pepper Crab. If you go there, make sure you arrive at 5:30 when it opens. Also, bring a lot of napkins. Even if you don't stay in Joo Chiat, it is a fun place to walk around and you should go to Eng seng.

Hi there,

1) First of all: Only a part of Geylang is a "red lights district" and you don't necessarily have to stay there...

2) of the three areas you mentioned, 'Little India' seems to be the best, mostly because the MRT passes through there and it's easy to get anywhere...

3) Here is a link to a list of Singapore's best budget accommodation - It has some good info about the various places, so you can compare for yourself...

Yep, if in your budget, http://nof.ywca.org.sg/index.php?opt...=58&Itemid=205 is a great location.

How about Ibis which is near Bugis MRT station.
