Where to stay in Koyasan?

Hi all!

Just after opinions on shukubo in Koyasan. I would preferably like to stay somewhere historic, but a little less touristy.

We are only there for one night, in early July. I know this is peak season, hence why I am after somewhere that might be a bit quieter.

Any recommendations would be great.

Thanks,

Emily

Both Kja and I have stayed at Shojosin-in and recommend it.

My husband and I splurged a little and booked the private hanare residence, a lovely standalone building in the grounds, with its own bathroom facilities and garden. It was my first trip to Japan and I was nervous then of shared bathrooms.

I loved our stay there and the location next to Okuno-in was superb. The dinner and breakfast were also very enjoyable.

We did observe the monks' morning prayer session but there were no additional activities at this temple such as joining in with meditation or guided walks into Okuno-in. So if you are interested in those, you may prefer a different temple.

We stayed at Eko-In. It was in a great location, close to Okuno-in and considerable less expensive than Shojosin-in. Share facilities didn't prove to be an issue and we found it very quiet ( we stayed in April which was supposed to be a busy time). The food was excellent and almost converted me to vegetarianism!

We also booked the hanare at Shojosin-in and loved it. Would recommend highly, especially if you are traveling with 3 or 4 people; otherwise, I'm sure the rooms in the main building are good as well.

Thanks guys. I have been looking at both of those actually. We will probably go towards the cheaper option, as our ryokan in Hakone will blow the budget somewhat.
