Where To Purchase A Skirt (Sinh) In Luang Prabang
My son is headed to Luang Prabang next month for 1.5 days as part of a SE Asia trip. As I was handing him a bunch of Thanksgiving leftovers, I asked him to get me one of those beautiful skirts (sinh) that I regret not buying when I was there five years ago. He agreed, with the stipulation that I send him a link to a blog with a specific picture, and perhaps some information as to where to shop.
Does anyone know of a shop in LP? I believe the nicer skirts are made of silk. Do you have any idea what they would cost? Also, I am confused if the skirt is actually a piece of fabric, or is it an actual skirt? Lastly, if anyone has a great picture, please send the link.
Thanks in advance.

I bought a silk one in February 2014 from a shop in the main shopping street. It’s a tubular piece of fabric with a right over left full front pleat held at the waist band with hook and eye fasteners. The skirt has darts in the back to get that fitted look. I hope that makes sense. There were ready made skirts and tailors in this shop (and plenty of others) and I had time to get small alterations made overnight. Perhaps you could give exact hip and waist measurements to your son, minor adjustments can be made by any home sewer or alterations person.
Sorry I can’t be more specific with the shop name. I do remember being impressed with many stylish clothing stores in Luang Prabang. Google earth might help in the search.

I regret that we didn't visit this shop as they do promote local craftspeople and have fair trade practices, but I know I read about them and would visit if we returned to LP.

satoric - You are always such an accomplished traveler. You found a skirt at a nice shop, and had it altered right there? I'm impressed. Do know the fabric, and about what you paid?
progol - That website is perfect, thank you. Maybe that's the best place to get the skirt. I enjoyed reading the article as well.
thursdays - Thank you for your help. I am still confused, I thought the skirt wraps around like a sarong, or is it a tube? I agree that it may be best to buy just the fabric.

Thanks CL, it might even see the light of day now that you’ve prompted me to look at it. The fabric is silk, plain at the top with a woven small pattern from knee to mid calf. It cost around US $20. Just on your comment to thursdaysd, the fabric would be a flat piece if bought as fabric. Sewing the ends together to form a tube is the first step to your finished sinh.

Both of mine are now western style skirts, but traditionally they would be tubes, not sarongs. See:
