Where to in Cambodia?
I've been to Angkor Wat (thrilled) and the capital (okay). What else is there to explore? How is the beach area(s)? Like poking around temples, local markets, hiking, snorkling, taking photos.... An active vacation. Will have five days.

Anybody been to Kampot City and the beach town of Sihanoukville?

We Like Kratie, a small riverside market town on the way to Lao - a great stopover for a few days if travelling to Lao. Ko Tonsay (aka Rabbit Island) is a small island 30 mins by boat from Kep. Nice beaches and fantastic seafood, basic accomodation but a great place to get away from it all.
A couple of good resources for Cambodia: http://www.travelfish.org/country/cambodia http://www.talesofasia.com/cambodia.htm The last one is a bitOTT with the adverisements but does conatin good info |
I enjoyed Battangbang. Took the bus from Phnom Penh and then went by local boat to Siem Reap. The town itself is not much but I hired a moto and did a tour of the surrounding countryside which was great. Culminated in a trip on the bamboo train. Driver spoke reasonable English and we visited temples, killing cave, villages, etc etc.

Rabbit Island yes.
What about Phou Quoc (used to belong to Cambodia, does that count? Alas, you'd need a VN visa) but better IMO I think you'd have to decide between "temples" and "beach". I can't think of any one place that encompasses them both. Have also a look at canbypublications.com |
There's a few cave temples near Kep/Kampot, which I like a lot for a very quiet holiday. Bokor mountain was fantastic, but I get confusing reports on what it's status is now.

We enjoyed Battambang as well, the surrounding villages, small temples and the bamboo train. We also signed up for a cooking class - lots of fun.
If you're interested in our report and pictures, you can click on my ID and find my trip report. We didn't manage to get to Kampot and Kep on this trip for lack of time, but those are great options as well. Maybe a couple of days in Battambang followed by Kampot and Kep? |
Thank you all for the comments and info.
